Abstract:

Introduction The potential flow of polluted groundwater in porous media is usually modelled by a mixed or mixed-hybrid formulations which allow more accurate treatment of the velocities of the studied contaminant in comparison to primal formulation. Moreover, in some applications, the model must reflect the complex geographical and geological structure of the considered area. Layers of stratified rocks with substantially different physical properties must be modelled using the appropriate discretization of geological region. The flow domain is usually fairly large (several squared kilometres) in comparison to the vertical thickness of sedimented layers (several metres). These characteristics can be correspondingly described by trilateral prismatic elements with vertical faces and general nonparallel bases. Detailed description of this element type and a corresponding mixed-hybrid formulation of the problem has been presented in [1], where existence and uniqueness of the approx
