Abstract

Messengers is a system for general-purpose distributed computing based on the concept of autonomous mobile objects, capable of navigating through a network and invoking native-mode C functions in the nodes they visit. We present performance measurements using three specific applications to illustrate the cost of using this paradigm for developing and using distributed applications. 1 Introduction Autonomous objects are mobile entities, capable of navigating autonomously through the underlying computational network and performing various tasks at the nodes they visit. The autonomous-object approach to distributed computation has several functional advantages over the conventional message-passing approach. Autonomous objects can be programmed independently of the network topology and the hardware architecture.
