Abstract
The combination of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to deliver transport services has caused significant performance problems mainly due to the interaction of congestion control algorithms of TCP and ATM. In this paper two proposals are made to organise congestion control and are based on a multi-agent approach which provides the use of adaptive and intelligent agents. A cooperative and predictive control scheme is provided by the multi-agent systems at both levels (TCP and ATM). Subsequently, we make a third proposal based on TCP and ATM rate coordination at the network's boundaries. We show that the agents (at TCP and ATM level) are able to autonomously plan and pursue their actions and goals, to cooperate, coordinate and respond flexibly and intelligently to dynamic and unpredictable situations.
