Abstract
Like other scientific fields, computer science is in great need of experimentation to support, improve, disprove and even establish theories. One area in which experimental results are highly desired involves regression testing, which is performed on modified software to provide confidence that the software behaves correctly and that modifications have not adversely impacted the software's quality. Generally, many of the problems related to regression testing involve complex, practical tradeoffs between costs and benefits, that cannot easily be evaluated analytically. Thus, empirical studies of regression testing are especially necessary. We have conducted two experiments on regression testing topics: "an investigation of program spectra" and "an analysis of two safe regression test selection techniques". In addition to generating and analyzing the results for each experiment, we have also established a prototype infrastructure to facilitate experimentation with regression testing in p...
