Abstract

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of D, a small functional language with strict execution semantics. We define the transformation and compilation techniques that we apply to translate a D program into portable C code that corresponds (with some restrictions) in structure and quality to a program written by an experienced human programmer. The target code may use the runtime system of the computer algebra library Saclib. Thus a D program can call all functions of this library and can be itself easily embedded into Saclib applications. D is going to serve as the basis of a parallel functional programming system for computer algebra.
