Abstract
There are evident parallels between historical sound change and the phonetic variation exhibited in the microstructure of on-line speech. For example, the lenition of lenis stops in German and Swedish spontaneous speech (e.g. intervocalic /d/ occurring as [ ] or []) may be seen as a synchronic parallel to the historical change from Indo-European voiced alveolar or dental stop to Modern Icelandic / / and Danish //. In this paper it is demonstrated that historical changes involving emergent segments also have parallels in on-line data.
