Abstract
In this paper, we express problems we encountered while trying to design operators for an explanation planner. We experienced those troubles in three different projects, with three different domains. Our main problem was (1) the lack of structure in the operator base and (2) the fact that artificial information had to be included in operators. After a precise description of the problem, we present a solution which consists in plunging the explanation operators into the knowledge base structure. 1 Introduction The goal of this paper is to express a problem we encountered several times while working on the design of an explanation system, and in particular while trying to write operators for an explanation planner. We experienced this problem in three different projects, at the university of Orsay, France, while working on the theoretical aspects of explanation (the domain was the game of Bridge), at the university of Pittsburgh, U.S.A., while designing operators for J. Moore's p...
