Abstract

this paper, we consider the question of whether certain parts of songs are more discriminatory than others. Specifically, we look at vocal segments versus instrumental music segments, and ask whether the singer's voice is more distinctive than the instrumental background as a basis for artist classification. The question has relevance to recommendation engines (perhaps it is the quality of certain artists' voices that you like), content-based music information retrieval (IR), and the general question of how to capture the essential character of a piece of music with a few hundred numbers
