Abstract
Abstract — The design of efficient MAC layer protocols for wireless sensor networks has recently been an active area of research. This has led to the proposal of a number of new MAC layer protocols based on CSMA, TDMA and a mixture of both CSMA and TDMA. This paper attempts to analytically model one particular performance metric extensively used to evaluate MAC layer protocols – singlehop channel utilization. Two CSMA-based schemes – B-MAC and Sift, and two TDMA-based schemes – P-TDMA and Z-MAC are studied and closed form expressions for their channel utilization are derived. The analysis is further validated by NS2 simulation. I.
