Abstract

for his advice and suggestions, and to our students at both Carnegie Mellon and Princeton whose enthusiasm (and patience!) was instrumental in helping to create the course and this text. What follows is a working draft of a planned book that seeks to strike a careful balance between developing the theoretical foundations of programming languages and explaining the pragmatic issues involved in their design and implementation. Many considerations come into play in the design of a programming language. I seek here to demonstrate the central role of type theory and operational semantics in helping to define a language and to understand its properties. Comments and suggestions are most welcome. Please send any you may have to me by electronic mail.
