Abstract

Mathematics is a new area of advanced applications for database technology. We report on our recent work constructing two prototypes of intelligent mathematical databases, and on the lessons learnt. The integration of various paradigms --- relational, logic, functional, and object-oriented --- in the database, and the incorporation of the database facilities into a computer algebra system are discussed. Key Words: mathematical database, deductive database, object-oriented database, group theory, multiattribute indexing, partial match retrieval, range queries 1 Introduction Mathematics is a new area of advanced applications for database technology [18, 22, 23]. We report on our recent work constructing two prototypes of intelligent mathematical databases [5, 6], and on the lessons learnt. Knowledge bases are required to assist computational algebra, mathematical research, and their applications to sciences and engineering. Applications of symmetry to solving problems in science and en...
