This paper and our conference paper (Abbott, Altenkirch, Ghani, and McBride, 2003b) explain and analyse the notion of the derivative of a data structure as the type of its onehole contexts based on the central observation made by McBride (2001). To make the idea precise we need a generic notion of a data type, which leads to the notion of a container, introduced in (Abbott, Altenkirch, and Ghani, 2003a) and investigated extensively in (Abbott, 2003). Using containers we can provide a notion of linear map which is the concept missing from McBride’s first analysis. We verify the usual laws of differential calculus including the chain rule and establish laws for initial algebras and terminal coalgebras.

Abstract. We are investigating McBride’s idea that the type of onehole contexts are the formal derivative of a functor from a categorical perspective. Exploiting our recent work on containers we are able to characterise derivatives by a universal property and show that the laws of calculus including a rule for initial algebras as presented by McBride hold — hence the differentiable containers include those generated by polynomials and least fixpoints. Finally, we discuss abstract containers (i.e. quotients of containers) — this includes a container which plays the role of e x in calculus by being its own derivative. 1

This note is about work in progress on the topic of “internal type theory ” where we investigate the internal formalization of the categorical metatheory of constructive type theory in (an extension of) itself. The basic notion is that of a category with families, a categorical notion of model of dependent type theory. We discuss how to formalize the notion of category with families inside type theory and how to build initial categories with families. Initial categories with families will be term models which play the role of canonical syntax for dependent type theory. We also discuss the formalization of the result that categories with finite limits give rise to categories with families. This yields a typetheoretic perspective on Curien’s work on “substitution up to isomorphism”. Our formalization is being carried out in the proof assistant Agda 2 developed at Chalmers. 1

Abstract. We investigate the logical aspects of the partial λcalculus with equality, exploiting an equivalence between partial λtheories and partial cartesian closed categories (pcccs) established here. The partial λcalculus with equality provides a fullblown intuitionistic higher order logic, which in a precise sense turns out to be almost the logic of toposes, the distinctive feature of the latter being unique choice. We give a linguistic proof of the generalization of the fundamental theorem of toposes to pcccs with equality; type theoretically, one thus obtains that the partial λcalculus with equality encompasses a MartinLöfstyle dependent type theory. This work forms part of the semantical foundations for the higher order algebraic specification language HasCasl.
