Understanding the implementation of a certain feature of a system requires to identify the computational units of the system that contribute to this feature. In many cases, the mapping of features to the source code is poorly documented. In this paper, we present a semi-automatic technique that reconstructs the mapping for features that are triggered by the user and exhibit an observable behavior. The mapping is in general not injective; that is, a computational unit may contribute to several features. Our technique allows to distinguish between general and specific computational units with respect to a given set of features. For a set of features, it also identifies jointly and distinctly required computational units.

Dynamic information collected as a software system executes can help software engineers perform some tasks on a system more effectively. To interpret the sizable amount of data generated from a system's execution, engineers require tool support. We have developed an off-line, flexible approach for visualizing the operation of an object-oriented system at the architectural level. This approach complements and extends existing profiling and visualization approaches available to engineers attempting to utilize dynamic information. In this paper, we describe the technique and discuss preliminary qualitative studies into its usefulness and usability. These studies were undertaken in the context of performance tuning tasks. Recovering architectural documentation from code is crucial to maintaining and reengineering software systems. Reverse engineering and program understanding approaches are often limited by the fact that (1) they propose a fixed set of predefined views and (2) they consider either purely static or purely dynamic views of the application. In this paper we present an environment supporting the generation of tailorable views of object-oriented systems from both static and dynamic information. Our approach is based on the combination of user-defined queries which allow an engineer to create high-level abstractions and to produce views using these abstractions.

Implementing, validating, modifying, or reengineering an object-oriented system requires an understanding of the object and class interactions which occur as a program executes. This work seeks to identify, visualize, and analyze interactions in object-oriented program executions as a means for examining and understanding dynamic behavior. We have discovered recurring interaction scenarios in program executions that can be used as abstractions in the understanding process, and have developed a means for identifying these interaction patterns. Our visualizations focus on supporting design recovery, validation, and reengineering tasks, and can be applied to both object-oriented and procedural programs.

Execution patterns are a new metaphor for visualizing execution traces of object-oriented programs. We present an execution pattern view that lets a programmer visualize and explore a program's execution at varied levels of abstraction. The view employs visual, navigational, and analytical techniques that accommodate lengthy, real-world traces. By classifying repetitive behavior automatically into high-order execution patterns, we drastically reduce the information a programmer must assimilate, with little loss of insight.

Scenario diagrams are a well-known notation for visualizing the message flow in object-oriented systems. Traditionally, they are used in the analysis and design phases of software development to prototype the expected behavior of a system. We show how they can be used reversely for understanding and browsing existing software. We have implemented a tool called Scene that automatically produces scenario diagrams for existing objectoriented systems. The tool makes extensive use of an active text framework providing the basis for various hypertext-like facilities. Tracking the changing dynamics of object-oriented frameworks[5], design patterns[7], architectural styles[8], and subsystems during the development and reuse cycle can aid producing complex systems. Unfortunately, current object-oriented programming tools are relatively oblivious to the rich architectural abstractions in a system. This paper shows that architecture-oriented visualization, the graphical presentation of system statics and dynamics in terms of its architectural abstractions, is highly beneficial in designing complex systems. In addition, the paper presents architecture-aware instrumentation, a new technique for building efficient on-line instrumentation to support architectural queries. Software development and maintenance tasks rely on and can benefit from an increased level of program understanding. Object-oriented programming languages provide features which facilitate software maintenance, yet the same features often make object-oriented programs more difficult to understand. We support the use of program visualization techniques to foster object-oriented program comprehension. This paper identifies ways that visualization can increase program understanding, and presents a means for characterizing both static and dynamic aspects of an object-oriented program. We then describe the implementation of a prototypical tool for visualizing the execution of C++ programs. Based on this work, we define a framework for the visualization of object-oriented software which requires little or no programmer intervention and provides a mechanism which allows users to focus quickly on particular aspects of the program. Understanding the run-time behavior of object-oriented legacy systems is a complex task due to factors such as late binding and polymorphism. Current approaches extract and use information from the complete execution trace of a system. The sheer size and complexity of such traces make their handling, storage, and analysis difficult. Current software systems which run almost non-stop do not permit such a full analysis. In this paper we present a lightweight approach based on the extraction of a condensed amount of information, e.g., measurements, that does not require a full trace. Using this condensed information, we propose a visualization approach which allows us to identify and understand certain aspects of the objects' lifetime such as their role played in the creation of other objects and the communication architecture they support.
