Using hidden Markov models (HMM's), an unobstrusive single view camera system is developed that can recognize hand gestures, namely, a subset of American Sign Language (ASL). Previous systems have concentrated on finger spelling or isolated word recognition, often using tethered electronic gloves for input. We achieve high recognition rates for full sentence ASL using only visual cues. A forty word lexicon consisting of personal pronouns, verbs, nouns, and adjectives is used to create 494 randomly constructed five word sentences that are signed by the subject to the computer. The data is separated into a 395 sentence training set and an independent 99 sentence test set. While signing, the 2D position, orientation, and eccentricity of bounding ellipses of the hands are tracked in real time with the assistance of solidly colored gloves. Graphical techniques for modeling the dependencies of random variables have been explored in a variety of di erent areas including statistics, statistical physics, arti-cial intelligence, speech recognition, image processing, and genetics. Formalisms for manipulating these models have been developed relatively independently in these research communities. In this paper we explore hidden Markov models (HMMs) and related structures within the general framework of probabilistic independence networks (PINs). The paper contains a self-contained review of the basic principles of PINs. It is shown that the well-known forward-backward (F-B) and Viterbi algorithms for HMMs are special cases of more general inference algorithms for arbitrary PINs. Furthermore, the existence of inference and estimation algorithms for more general graphical models provides a set of analysis tools for HMM practitioners who wish to explore a richer class of HMM structures. Examples of relatively complex models to handle sensor fusion and coarticulation in speech recognition are introduced and treated within the graphical model framework to illustrate the advantages of the general approach. 1

Abstract—An overview of statistical and information-theoretic aspects of hidden Markov processes (HMPs) is presented. An HMP is a discrete-time finite-state homogeneous Markov chain observed through a discrete-time memoryless invariant channel. In recent years, the work of Baum and Petrie on finite-state finite-alphabet HMPs was expanded to HMPs with finite as well as continuous state spaces and a general alphabet. In particular, statistical properties and ergodic theorems for relative entropy densities of HMPs were developed. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum-likelihood (ML) parameter estimator were proved under some mild conditions. Similar results were established for switching autoregressive processes. These processes generalize HMPs. New algorithms were developed for estimating the state, parameter, and order of an HMP, for universal coding and classification of HMPs, and for universal decoding of hidden Markov channels. These and other related topics are reviewed in this paper. Autonomous mobile robots need very reliable navigation capabilities in order to operate unattended for long periods of time. We present a technique for achieving this goal that uses partially observable Markov decision process models (POMDPs) to explicitly model navigation uncertainty, including actuator and sensor uncertainty and approximate knowledge of the environment. This allows the robot to maintain a probability distribution over its current pose. Thus, while the robot rarely knows exactly where it is, it always has some belief as to what its true pose is, and is never completely lost. We present a navigation architecture based on POMDPs that provides a uniform framework with an established theoretical foundation for pose estimation, path planning, robot control during navigation, and learning. Our experiments show that this architecture indeed leads to robust corridor navigation for an actual indoor mobile robot. 1

Our goal is to exploit human motion and object context to perform action recognition and object classification. Towards this end, we introduce a framework for recognizing actions and objects by measuring image-, object- and action-based information from video. Hidden Markov models are combined with object context to classify hand actions, which are aggregated by a Bayesian classifier to summarize activities. We also use Bayesian methods to differentiate the class of unknown objects by evaluating detected actions along with lowlevel, extracted object features. Our approach is appropriate for locating and classifying objects under a variety of conditions including full occlusion. We show experiments where both familiar and previously unseen objects are recognized using action and context information. 1. In part of speech tagging by Hidden Markov Model, a statistical model is used to assign grammatical categories to words in a text. Early work in the field relied on a corpus which had been tagged by a human annotator to train the model. More recently, Cutting et al. (1992) sug- gest that training can be achieved with a minimal lexicon and a limited amount of a priori information about probabilities, by using an Baum-Welch re-estimation to automatically refine the model. In this paper, I report two experiments designed to determine how much manual training information is needed. The first experiment suggests that initial biasing of either lexical or transition probabilities is essential to achieve a good accuracy. The second experiment reveals that there are three distinct patterns of Baum-Welch reestimation. In two of the patterns, the re-estimation ultimately reduces the accuracy of the tagging rather than improving it. The pattern which is applicable can be predicted from the quality of the initial model and the similarity between the tagged training corpus (if any) and the corpus to be tagged. Heuristics for deciding how to use re-estimation in an effective manner are given. The conclusions are broadly in agreement with those of Merialdo (1994), but give greater detail about the contributions of different parts of the model.

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are statistical models of sequential data that have been used successfully in many machine learning applications, especially for speech recognition. Furthermore, in the last few years, many new and promising probabilistic models related to HMMs have been proposed. We first summarize the basics of HMMs, and then review several recent related learning algorithms and extensions of HMMs, including in particular hybrids of HMMs with artificial neural networks, Input-Output HMMs (which are conditional HMMs using neural networks to compute probabilities), weighted transducers, variable-length Markov models and Markov switching state-space models.
