Conference on Internet Search and Innovation for valuable feedback. We are grateful to the NET Institute, www.NETinst.org, for financial support. Responses to Entry in Multi-Sided Markets: The Impact of Craigslist on Local Newspapers How do firms respond to entry in multi-sided markets? We address this question by studying the impact of Craigslist, a website providing classified-advertising services, on local US newspapers. We exploit temporal and geographical variation in Craigslist’s entry to show that newspapers with greater reliance on classified-ad revenue experience a larger drop in classified-ad rates after Craigslist’s entry. The impact of Craigslist’s entry on the classified-ad side appears to propagate to other sides of the newspapers ’ market. On the subscriber side, these newspapers experience an increase in subscription prices, a decrease in circulation, and an increase in differentiation from each other. On the display-ad side, affected newspapers experience a decrease in display-ad rates. We also find evidence that affected newspapers are less likely to make their content available

Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions are changing the way that software is produced, distributed, consumed, and priced. PaaS, also known as cloud platform, offer an execution environment based on software platforms. To be competitive on the market, PaaS providers have to be aware of drivers of successful platforms and design or adjust their business models accordingly. Surprisingly, prior research has made little attempt to investigate consumers ’ preferences on PaaS that influence developers ’ choice on PaaS solutions. This paper examines this understudied issue through a conjoint study. First a comprehensive literature analysis on PaaS has been conducted in order to build the study design on a rigorous foundation. The conducted conjoint survey contained ten attributes together with 26 corresponding attribute levels and has been completed by 103 participants. Based on the results, a prioritized list of customers ’ preferences for PaaS has been created.

We examine how exercising control over a technology platform can increase prof-its and innovation. By choosing how much to open and when to bundle enhance-ments, platform sponsors can influence choices of ecosystem partners. Platform openness invites developer participation but sacrifices direct sales. Bundling en-hancements early drives developers away but bundling late delays platform growth. Ironically, developers can prefer sponsored platforms to unmanaged open stan-dards despite giving up their applications. Results can inform innovation strategy, antitrust and intellectual property law, and the management of competition.

Recently, the interest in the innovation of digital services based on open public information (i.e. open data) has increased dramatically. Innovation contests, such as idea competitions and digital innovation contests, have become popular instruments to accelerate the development of new service ideas and prototypes. However, only a few of the service prototypes developed at innovation contests become viable digital services. In order to strengthen the role of innovation contests as innovation instruments, we propose a framework of innovation barriers to open innovation of digital services.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions are changing the ways that software is produced, distributed, consumed, and priced. Unlike Software as a Service (SaaS) or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), PaaS allows for value co-creation by offering complementary components and applications that are developed in emerging ecosystems of third party developers. Despite increasing interest among practitioners and researchers, there has been little work in understanding how PaaS business models should be designed to establish a flourishing ecosystem. We seek to develop a design theory that facilitates the design of PaaS business models, taking into account the specifics of multisided business models. Four meta-requirements describe the purpose and scope of our design theory, and six design principles guide PaaS providers in designing effective business models. By focusing on designing business models, our research goes beyond previous approaches for studying PaaS.

The framework has been designed using a systematic research approach including a literature review of existing barriers, an online survey with participants before an innovation contest, and systematic follow-up interviews with teams participating in the contest. The framework consists of 18 innovation barriers and is intended to be used when organizing innovation contests. It supports the process after the contest when prototypes are transformed into viable digital services. For future research, we suggest the framework to be validated in a longitudinal study involving additional cases. Furthermore, we suggest using the framework as a starting point for constructing guidelines that can help in designing innovation contests.

In recent years, the formerly oligopolistic Enterprise Application Software (EAS) industry began to dis-integrate into focal inter-firm networks with one huge, powerful, and multi-national platform vendor as the center, surrounded by hundreds or even thousands of small, niche players that act as complementors. From a theoretical point of view, these platform ecosystems may be governed by two organizing princi-ples- trust and power. However, it is neither from a practical nor from a theoretical perspective clear, how trust and power relate to each other, i.e. whether they act as complements or substitutes. This study tries to elaborate our understanding of the relationship of trust and power by exploring their interplay using multi-dimensional conceptualizations of trust and power, and by investigating potential dynamics in this interplay over the course of a partnership. Based on an exploratory multiple-case study of seven
