The Internet is undergoing substantial changes from a communication and browsing infrastructure to a medium for conducting business and marketing a myriad of services. The World Wide Web provides a uniform and widely-accepted application interface used by these services to reach multitudes of clients. These changes place the web server at the center of a gradually emerging eservice infrastructure with increasing requirements for service quality and reliability guarantees in an unpredictable and highly-dynamic environment.

A temporal database contains time-varying data. In a real-time database transactions have deadlines or timing constraints. In this paper we review the substantial research in these two heretofore separate research areas. We first characterize the time domain, then investigate temporal and real-time data models. We evaluate temporal and real-time query languages along several dimensions. Temporal and real-time DBMS implementation is examined. We conclude with a summary of the major accomplishments of the research to date, and list several research questions that should be addressed next. In this paper, we present the Cello disk scheduling framework for meeting the diverse service requirements of applications. Cello employs a two-level disk scheduling architecture, consisting of a classindependent scheduler and a set of class-specific schedulers. The two levels of the framework allocate disk bandwidth at two timescales: the class-independent scheduler governs the coarse-grain allocation of bandwidth to application classes, while the class-specific schedulers control the fine-grain interleaving of requests. The two levels of the architecture separate application-independent mechanisms from application-specific scheduling policies, and thereby facilitate the co-existence of multiple class-specific schedulers. Power efficient design of real-time systems based on programmable processors becomes more important as system functionality is increasingly realized through software. This paper presents a powerefficient version of a widely used fixed priority scheduling method. The method yields a power reduction by exploiting slack times, both those inherent in the system schedule and those arising from variations of execution times. The proposed run-time mechanism is simple enough to be implemented in most kernels. Experimental results show that the proposed scheduling method obtains a significant power reduction across several kinds of applications.

To support the requirements for the transmission of continuous media, such as audio and video, multiservice packet switching networks must provide service guarantees to connections, including guarantees on throughput, network delays, and network delay variations. For the most demanding applications, the network must offer a service which can provide deterministic guarantees for the maximum delay ofpackets from all connections, referred to as bounded delay service. The admission control functions in a network with a bounded delay service must have available schedulability conditions that detect violations of delay guarantees in a network switch. In this study, exact schedulability conditions are presented for packet switches which transmit packets based on an Earliest-Deadline-First (EDF) or a Static-Priority (SP) algorithm. The schedulability conditions are given in terms of a general traffic model, making the conditions applicable to a large class of traffic specifications. A comparison of the new schedulability conditions with existing, less accurate, conditions show the e ciency gain obtained by using exact conditions. Examples are presented that show how the selection of a particular traffic specification and a schedulability condition impact the efficiency of a bounded delay service.

Next-generation distributed systems will support corLtLzLzLous medLa (digztal audio and video) in the same framework as other data. Many applications that use continuous media need guaran-teed end-to-end performance (bounds on throughput and delay). To reliably support these requirements, system components such as CPU schedulers, networks, and file systems must offer performance guarantees. A rnetasclzedtder coordinates these components, negotiating end-to-end guarantees on behalf of clients. The CM-resource model, described in this paper, provides a basis for such a metascheduler. It defines a workload parameterizatlon, an abstract interface to resources, and an algorithm for reserving multiple resources. The model uses an economic approach to dividing end-to-end delay, and it allows system components to “work ahead,” improving the performance of nonreal-time workload.

We consider the problem of OS resource management for real-time and multimedia systems where multiple activities with different timing constraints must be scheduled concurrently. Time on a particular resource is shared among its users and must be globally managed in real-time and multimedia systems. A resource kernel is meant for use in such systems and is defined to be one which provides timely, guaranteed and protected access to system resources. The resource kernel allows applications to specify only their resource demands leaving the kernel to satisfy those demands using hidden resource management schemes. This separation of resource specification from resource management allows OS-subsystem-specific customization by extending, optimizing or even replacing resource management

This paper surveys the design of embedded computer systems, which use software running on programmable computers to im-plement system functions. Creating an embedded computer system which meets its performance, cost, and design time goals is a hardware-software co-design problewhe design of the hard-ware and software components influence each other. This paper emphasizes a historical approach to show the relationships be-tween well-understood design problems and the as-yet unsolved problems in co-design. We describe the relationship between hard-ware and sofhvare architecture in the early stages of embedded system design. We describe analysis techniques for hardware and software relevant to the architectural choices required for hard-ware-software co-design. We also describe design and synthesis techniques for co-design and related problems.

This paper presents stride scheduling, a deterministic scheduling technique that efficiently supports the same flexible resource management abstractions introduced by lottery scheduling. Compared to lottery scheduling, stride scheduling achieves significantly improved accuracy over relative throughput rates, with significantly lower response time variability. Stride scheduling implements proportional-share control over processor time and other resources by cross-applying elements of rate-based flow control algorithms designed for networks. We introduce new techniques to support dynamic changes and higher-level resource management abstractions. We also introduce a novel hierarchical stride scheduling algorithm that achieves better throughput accuracy and lower response time variability than prior schemes. Stride scheduling is evaluated using both simulations and prototypes implemented for the Linux kernel.

INTRODUCTION Current disk drives have raw data rates of 5 to 10 million bits per second (Mbps) or more. Such rates suffice for many forms of digital audio and motion video (continuous media, or CM) data: audio data rates are from 8 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps, while compressed video ranges from one to several Mbps. However, when a disk is accessed via a general-purpose file system, the data rates seen by clients are generally lower and may vary unpredictably. We have developed a Continuous Media File System (CMFS) whose clients read and write files in "sessions", each with a guaranteed minimum data rate. Multiple sessions, perhaps with different data rates, can coexist. CMFS can handle non-real-time traffic concurrently with these real-time sessions. #################################### Authors' addresses: D.P.
