This research used an e-mail from mock Chinese consumers to investigate how Australian educational institutions use e-mail for overseas marketing and customer service. Less than two out of three of the 212 institutions sampled replied to a simple e-mail asking about fees and entry requirements. Even less institutions answered the questions promptly, politely, personally, professionally and promotionally. Despite e-mail’s widespread use, these results highlight implementation issues with this new marketing and customer service tool. The study gives institutions benchmarks and insights for improving e-mail marketing and online customer service. Academically, this paper supports past organisational research that size and industry sector relate to adopting innovations, suggests new metrics for measuring Internet adoption and proposes future research agendas.

Abstract — The use of wireless networking technologies has emerged over recent years in many application domains. The area of grids determines a potentially huge application domain, since the typical centralized computing centers require access from anywhere, e.g., from field engineers who are situated in a wireless network domain. Thus, the integration of suitable business views on mobile grids, of grid views on available technologies, and network views in a fully IP-based network domain determines the key challenge. The Akogrimo project’s architecture developed, is outlined and discussed in this paper and provides the major details required to offer a fully integrated and interoperable solution for those three views of concern.

This chapter develops a concept to evaluate the e-commerce-ability of a corporation and applies the framework to basic roles of the e-commerce environment. The concept comprises two components: A four dimensional framework is proposed which can be used to represent the degree of external coordination, the degree of alignment of business towards organizational and cultural rules of the networked economy, the degree of orientation towards customer needs and the degree of systematic and integral use of information and communication technology (ICT). Based on this framework, an evaluation approach is presented which supports a maturity analysis.

This chapter describes an architecture for the eMarketplace that integrates the interests of autonomous enterprises in a single open-market environment. The environment encompasses several systems and business issues, such as the many-to-many relationships between customers and suppliers, systems, and business-related services. The architecture for this integrated environment is business-centric and knowledge-oriented. In this architecture, the eMarketplace exists as a collection of economically motivated software agents. The architecture enables and supports common economic services, such as brokering, pricing, and negotiation, as well as cross-enterprise integration and cooperation in an electronic supplychain. We demonstrate the eMarketplace with two prototype systems. Copyright © 2004, Idea Group Inc. Copying or distributing in print or electronic forms without written

In the electronic commerce literature there is confusion as to the meaning and purpose of the term ‘business model’. There are wide ranging perceptions of the term causing many to wonder just what a business model is. Definitions vary as do the designated attributes of business models thereby creating problems for academics and professionals relying on the literature for guidance in understanding business models. This paper presents and analyses the definitions of ‘business model’ presented in the electronic commerce literature along with the designated business model attributes. The typologies and taxonomies of business models present in the literature are examined and evaluated. It is concluded that until there is some consensus as to the definition of ‘business model ’ and the attributes agreed upon, useful taxonomies of business models would not be forthcoming.
