Increasingly popular languages such as Java and C # require efficient garbage collection. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of MMTk, a Memory Management Toolkit for and in Java. MMTk is an efficient, composable, extensible, and portable framework for building garbage collectors. MMTk uses design patterns and compiler cooperation to combine modularity and efficiency. The resulting system is more robust, easier to maintain, and has fewer defects than monolithic collectors. Experimental comparisons with monolithic Java and C implementations reveal MMTk has significant performance advantages as well. Performance critical system software typically uses monolithic C at the expense of flexibility. Our results refute common wisdom that only this approach attains efficiency, and suggest that performance critical software can embrace modular design and high-level languages. 1

We present the design and implementation of a new garbage collection framework that significantly generalizes existing copying collectors. The Beltway framework exploits and separates object age and incrementality. It groups objects in one or more increments on queues called belts, collects belts independently, and collects increments on a belt in first-in-first-out order. We show that Beltway configurations, selected by command line options, act and perform the same as semi-space, generational, and older-first collectors, and encompass all previous copying collectors of which we are aware.

Pretenuring is a technique for reducing copying costs in garbage collectors. When pretenuring, the allocator places long-lived objects into regions that the garbage collector will rarely, if ever, collect. We extend previous work on profiling-driven pretenuring as follows. (1) We develop a collector-neutral approach to obtaining object lifetime profile information. We show that our collection of Java programs exhibits a very high degree of homogeneity of object lifetimes at each allocation site. This result is robust with respect to different inputs, and is similar to previous work on ML, but is in contrast to C programs, which require dynamic call chain context information to extract homogeneous lifetimes. Call-site homogeneity considerably simplifies the implementation of pretenuring and makes it more efficient. (2) Our pretenuring advice is neutral with respect to the collector algorithm, and we use it to improve two quite different garbage collectors: a traditional generational collector and an older-first collector. The system is also novel because it classifies and allocates objects into 3 categories: we allocate immortal objects into a permanent region that the collector will never consider, long-lived objects into a region in which the collector placed survivors of the most recent collection, and shortlived objects into the nursery, i.e., the default region. (3) We evaluate pretenuring on Java programs. Our simulation results show that pretenuring significantly reduces collector copying for generational and older-first collectors. 1.

We introduce a new family of connectivity-based garbage collectors (Cbgc) that are based on potential objectconnectivity properties. The key feature of these collectors is that the placement of objects into partitions is determined by performing one of several forms of connectivity analyses on the program. This enables partial garbage collections, as in generational collectors, but without the need for any write barrier.

Modern garbage collectors partition the set of heap objects to achieve the best performance. For example, generational garbage collectors partition objects by age and focus their efforts on the youngest objects. Partitioning by age works well for many programs because younger objects usually have short lifetimes and thus garbage collection of young objects is often able to free up many objects. However, generational garbage collectors are typically much less effcient for longer-lived objects, and thus prior work has proposed many enhancements to generational collection. Our work explores whether the connectivity of objects can yield useful partitions or improve existing partitioning schemes. We look at both direct (e.g., object A points to object B) and transitive (e.g., object A is reachable from object B) connectivity. Our results indicate that connectivity correlates strongly with object lifetimes and deathtimes and is therefore likely to be useful in partitioning objects.

Modern garbage collectors rely on read and write barriers imposed on heap accesses by the mutator, to keep track of references between different regions of the garbage collected heap, and to synchronize actions of the mutator with those of the collector. It has been a long-standing untested assumption that barriers impose significant overhead to garbage-collected applications. As a result, researchers have devoted effort to development of optimization approaches for elimination of unnecessary barriers, or proposed new algorithms for garbage collection that avoid the need for barriers while retaining the capability for independent collection of heap partitions. Garbage collection offers numerous software engineering advantages, but interacts poorly with virtual memory managers. Existing garbage collectors require far more pages than the application's working set and touch pages without regard to which ones are in memory, especially during full-heap garbage collection. The resulting paging can cause throughput to plummet and pause times to spike up to seconds or even minutes. We present a garbage collector that avoids paging. This bookmarking collector cooperates with the virtual memory manager to guide its eviction decisions. Using summary information ("bookmarks") recorded from evicted pages, the collector can perform in-memory full-heap collections. In the absence of memory pressure, the bookmarking collector matches the throughput of the best collector we tested while running in smaller heaps. In the face of memory pressure, it improves throughput by up to a factor of five and reduces pause times by up to a factor of 45 over the next best collector. Compared to a collector that consistently provides high throughput (generational mark-sweep), the bookmarking collector reduces pause times by up to 218x and improves throughput by up to 41x. Bookmarking collection thus provides greater utilization of available physical memory than other collectors while matching or exceeding their throughput.

Copying garbage collectors have a number of advantages over noncopying collectors, including cheap allocation and avoiding fragmentation. However, in order to provide completeness (the guarantee to reclaim each garbage object eventually), standard copying collectors require space equal to twice the size of the maximum live data for a program. We present a mark-copy collection algorithm (MC) that extends generational copying collection and significantly reduces the heap space required to run a program. MC reduces space overhead by 75–85 % compared with standard copying garbage collectors, increasing the range of applications that can use copying garbage collection. We show that when MC is given the same amount of space as a generational copying collector, it improves total execution time of Java benchmarks significantly in tight heaps, and by 5–10 % in moderate size heaps. We also compare the performance of MC with a (non-generational) mark-sweep collector and a hybrid copying/mark-sweep generational collector. We find that MC can run in heaps comparable in size to the minimum heap space required by mark-sweep. We also find that for most benchmarks MC is significantly faster than mark-sweep in small and moderate size heaps. When compared with the hybrid collector, MC improves total execution time by about 5 % for some benchmarks, partly by increasing the speed of execution of the application code.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of prolific and non-prolific types, based on the number of instantiated objects of those types. We demonstrate that distinguishing between these types enables a new class of techniques for memory management and data locality, and facilitates the deployment of known techniques. Specifically, we first present a new type-based approach to garbage collection that has similar attributes but lower cost than generational collection. Then we describe the short type pointer technique for reducing memory requirements of objects (data) used by the program. We also discuss techniques to facilitate the recycling of prolific objects and to simplify object co-allocation decisions.

Programmers are writing a large and rapidly growing number of programs in object-oriented languages such as Java that require garbage collection (GC). To explore the design and evaluation of GC algorithms quickly, researchers are using simulation based on traces of object allocation and lifetime behavior. The brute force method generates perfect traces using a whole-heap GC at every potential GC point in the program. Because this process is prohibitively expensive, researchers often use granulated traces by collecting only periodically, e.g., every 32K bytes of allocation.
