We study a variant of Levi and Sangiorgi's Safe Ambients (SA) enriched with passwords (SAP). In SAP by managing passwords, for example generating new ones and distributing them selectively, an ambient may now program who may migrate into its computation space, and when. Moreover in SAP an ambient may provide different services depending on the passwords exhibited by its incoming clients. We give an lts based operational semantics for SAP and a labelled bisimulation based equivalence which is proved to coincide with barbed congruence. Our notion of bisimulation is used to prove a set of algebraic laws which are subsequently exploited to prove more significant examples. 1

In this dissertation we investigate presheaf models for concurrent computation. Our aim is to provide a systematic treatment of bisimulation for a wide range of concurrent process calculi. Bisimilarity is defined abstractly in terms of open maps as in the work of Joyal, Nielsen and Winskel. Developing a theory of bisimulation in higherorder languages can be hard. Particularly challenging can be: (1) the proof of congruence, as well as enhancements of the bisimulation proof method with “upto context ” techniques, and (2) obtaining definitions and results that scale to languages with different features. To meet these challenges, we present environmental bisimulations, a form of bisimulation for higherorder languages, and its basic theory. We consider four representative calculi: pure λcalculi (callbyname and callbyvalue), callbyvalue λcalculus with higherorder store, and then HigherOrder πcalculus. In each case: we present the basic properties of environmental bisimilarity, including congruence; we show that it coincides with contextual equivalence; we develop some upto techniques, including upto context, as examples of possible enhancements of the associated bisimulation method. Unlike previous approaches (such as applicative bisimulations, logical relations, SumiiPierceKoutavasWand), our method does not require induction/indices on evaluation derivation/steps (which may complicate the proofs of congruence, transitivity, and the combination with upto techniques), or sophisticated methods such as Howe’s for proving congruence. It also scales from the pure λcalculi to the richer calculi with simple congruence proofs. 1

Expressiveness is achieved at the price of communication interferences on message reception whose resolution requires synchronisation of activities at multiple, distributed locations. We study a variant of BA aimed at controlling communication interferences as well as mobility ones. Our calculus draws inspiration from Safe Ambients (SA) (with passwords) and modifies the communication mechanism of BA. Expressiveness is maintained through a new form of cocapability that at the same time registers incoming agents with the receiver ambient and performs access control.

Abstract. We introduce a calculus of Mobile Resources (MR) tailored for the design and analysis of systems containing mobile, possibly nested, computing devices that may have resource and access constraints, and which are not copyable nor modifiable per se. We provide a reduction as well as a labelled transition semantics and prove a correspondence between barbed bisimulation congruence and a higherorder bisimulation. We provide examples of the expressiveness of the calculus, and apply the theory to prove one of its characteristic properties.

Abstract. In this paper, we present a unified approach to evaluating the relative expressive power of process calculi. In particular, we identify a small set of criteria (that have already been somehow presented in the literature) that an encoding should satisfy to be considered a good means for language comparison. We argue that the combination of such criteria is a valid proposal by noting that: (i) the best known encodings appeared in the literature satisfy them; (ii) this notion is not trivial, because there exist encodings that do not satisfy all the criteria we have proposed; (iii) the best known separation results can be formulated in terms of our criteria; and (iv) some widely believed (but never formally proved) separation results can be proved by using the criteria we propose. Moreover, the way in which we prove known separation results is easier and more uniform than the way in which such results were originally proved. 1
