This paper will focus on computer data networks and the spatial implications of their susceptibility to targeted attacks. Utilizing a database of national data carriers, simulations will be run to determine the repercussions of targeted attacks and what the relative merits of different methods of identifying critical nodes are. This analysis will include comparison of current methods employed in vulnerability ana lysis with spatially constructed methods incorporating regional and distance variables. In addition to vulnerability analysis a method will be proposed to analyze the fusion of physical and logical networks, and will discuss what new avenues this approach reveals. The results of the analysis will be placed in the context of national and regional security and economic impact

This article explores the linkage between telecommunications infrastructure and high-tech industry growth in cities of two metropolitan areas, Minneapolis—St. Paul, Minnesota and Phoenix, Arizona. Results indicate that cities with greater telecommunications capacity are more likely to have positive growth in high-tech industry and all sectors analyzed. Yet, the results also suggest that while we often think of high-tech industry as a single entity, it is important to disaggregate the industry to determine whether certain production processes and services make the firm react differently to telecommunications as a location factor. Where high-tech firms are locating and the degree to which telecommunications infrastructure is attractive to these firms is of great import given that cities desire to take part in the New Economy. The findings suggest that local policy makers may have more success in attracting high-tech business that fit the city’s current telecommunications profile.

This paper is written as the first chapter of an edited volume on evolutionary economics and economic geography (Frenken, K., editor, Applied Evolutionary Economics and Economic Geography, Cheltenham: Edward Elgar, expected publication date February 2007). The paper reviews empirical applications of evolutionary economics in the field of economic geography. The review is divided in four parts: the micro-level of the firm, the meso-levels of industry and network, and the macro-level of spatial system. Some remarks on evolutionary policy in regional development are added as well as a short discussion of empirical problems that remain. www.druid.dk ISBN 87-7873-218-2 1.

this paper the geography of the Internet is probed and mapped for Norway. Following established methods, the ownership of computer network addresses, known as IP addresses, is used to identify Norwegian `places' in cyberspace. A preliminary mapping of billing addresses of Norwegian top level domains displays a highly concentrated geography of Internet places delimited to a few urban centres

This PhD research is concerned with the analysis of the Internet infrastructure supply across the European cities and the results that this allocation may have for the economic development of the cities. This research’s main assumption is that the Internet is first and foremost an infrastructure which facilitates the informational economy by transporting its informational goods and services. The empirical research is firstly focused on explaining the determinant factors for the allocation of the Internet infrastructure across the European cities, uncovering this way the emerging new urban hierarchies. In addition, this PhD research will make an effort in approaching the economic results that this allocation may generate. Maybe is quite early to quantify them (if there are any) but the growing importance of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the modern economy justifies this attempt.
