Developing Collaborative Multimedia. The Mediate Toolkit Steinar Kristoffersen, Cand. Scient Accepted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Computing Lancaster University England, July 1998 The primary objective of this thesis is to provide improved support for developing synchronous, collaborative multimedia applications. It addresses the problem of weakly integrated multimedia support in CSCW applications leading to inflexible and redundant interaction management. This thesis introduces an empirically founded notion of co-operative work as Multimedia-Enhanced Collaborative Situations. It proposes the simple, nonprescriptive and computational Connection Component Model to support MultimediaEnhanced Collaborative Situations.
