The con uence of computers, communications and databases is quickly creating a global virtual database where many applications require real-time access to both temporally accurate and multimedia data. We are developing a global virtual database, called BeeHive, which is enterprise speci c and o ers features along real-time, fault tolerance, quality of service for audio and video, and security dimensions. Support of all these features and tradeo s between them will provide signi cant improvement in performance and functionality over browsers, browsers connected to databases, and, in general, today's distributed databases. We present a high level design for BeeHive andvarious novel component technologies that are to be incorporated into BeeHive.

The confluence of computers, communications, and databases is quickly creating a global virtual database where many applications require real-time access to both temporally accurate and multimedia data. This is particularly true in military and intelligence applications, but these required features are needed in many commercial applications as well. We are developing a distributed database, called BeeHive, which could offer features along different types of requirements: realtime, fault-tolerance, security, and quality-of service for audio and video. Support of these features and potential trade-offs between them could provide a significant improvement in performance and functionality over current distributed database and object management systems. In this paper, we present a high level design for BeeHive architecture and sketch the design of the BeeHive Object Model (BOM) which extends object-oriented data models by incorporating time and other features into objects.

This paper introduces an OSEK/VDX 1 Operating System implementation. OSEK/VDX is an industry standard for real-time operating system used in the field of automotive embedded software. This implementation is proposed in the context of the open source software, which interest needs not to be demonstrated any more. The paper explains the main implementation choices as well as the technique proposed for the generation of a real-time application. This implementation is nowadays available for three targets: Infineon C167, Darwin/PowerPC and Linux/x86. 1

Complex real-time embedded systems should be compositional and deterministic in the resource, time, and value domains. Determinism eases the engineering of correct systems and compositionality simplifies the assembly of complex systems out of smaller modules. This paper describes the PEACOD framework that is developed to support deterministic behavior for resource consumption, value passing, and timing. The paper introduces the notions of determinism in the context of the resource, value, and temporal domains, and present the resource-scope language construct that can be used to program such deterministic behaviors. Furthermore, the paper also provides semantics for the resource scope construct and uses these semantics to show that the program behavior is preserved under composition. The paper briefly describes the current implementation of PEACOD. 1.
