Abstract—We propose a new methodology for reliably solving the correspondence problem between sparse sets of points of two or more images. This is a key step in most problems of computer vision and, so far, no general method exists to solve it. Our methodology is able to handle most of the commonly used assumptions in a unique formulation, independent of the domain of application and type of features. It performs correspondence and outlier rejection in a single step and achieves global optimality with feasible computation. Feature selection and correspondence are first formulated as an integer optimization problem. This is a blunt formulation, which considers the whole combinatorial space of possible point selections and correspondences. To find its global optimal solution, we build a concave objective function and relax the search domain into its convexhull. The special structure of this extended problem assures its equivalence to the original one, but it can be optimally solved by efficient algorithms that avoid combinatorial search. This methodology can use any criterion provided it can be translated into cost functions with continuous second derivatives. In Part I (Floudas and Visweswaran, 1990), a deterministic global optimization approach was proposed for solving certain classes of nonconvex optimization problems. An algorithm, GOP, was presented for the rigorous solution of the problem through a series of primal and relaxed dual problems until the upper and lower bounds from these problems converged to an fflglobal optimum. In this paper, theoretical results are presented for several classes of mathematical programming problems that include : (i) the general quadratic programming problem, (ii) quadratic programming problems with quadratic constraints, (iii) pooling and blending problems, and (iv) unconstrained and constrained optimization problems with polynomial terms in the objective function and/or constraints. A deterministic global optimization approach is proposed for nonconvex constrained nonlinear programming problems. Partitioning of the variables, along with the introduction of transformation variables, if necessary, convert the original problem into primal and relaxed dual subproblems that provide valid upper and lower bounds respectively on the global optimum. Theoretical properties are presented which allow for a rigorous solution of the relaxed dual problem. Proofs of fflfinite convergence and fflglobal optimality are provided. The approach is shown to be particularly suited to (a) quadratic programming problems, (b) quadratically constrained problems, and (c) unconstrained and constrained optimization of polynomial and rational polynomial functions. The theoretical approach is illustrated through a few example problems. Finally, some further developments in the approach are briefly discussed.

Clustering is often formulated as the maximum likelihood estimation of a mixture model that explains the data. The EM algorithm widely used to solve the resulting optimization problem is inherently a gradientdescent method and is sensitive to initialization. The resulting solution is a local optimum in the neighborhood of the initial guess. This sensitivity to initialization presents a significant challenge in clustering large data sets into many clusters. In this paper, we present a different approach to approximate mixture fitting for clustering. We introduce an exemplarbased likelihood function that approximates the exact likelihood. This formulation leads to a convex minimization problem and an efficient algorithm with guaranteed convergence to the globally optimal solution. The resulting clustering can be thought of as a probabilistic mapping of the data points to the set of exemplars that minimizes the average distance and the informationtheoretic cost of mapping. We present experimental results illustrating the performance of our algorithm and its comparison with the conventional approach to mixture model clustering. 1

In Floudas and Visweswaran (1990, 1993), a deterministic global optimization approach was proposed for solving certain classes of nonconvex optimization problems. A global optimization algorithm, GOP, was presented for the solution of the problem through a series of primal and relaxed dual problems that provide valid upper and lower bounds respectively on the global solution. The algorithm was proven to have finite convergence to anglobal optimum. In this paper, a branchandbound framework of the GOP algorithm is presented, along with several reduction tests that can be applied at each node of the branchandbound tree. The effect of the properties is to prune the tree and provide tighter underestimators for the relaxed dual problems. We also present a mixedinteger linear programming (MILP) formulation for the relaxed dual problem, which enables an implicit enumeration of the nodes in the branchandbound tree at each iteration. Finally, an alternate branching scheme is presented for the solution of the relaxed dual problem through a linear number of subproblems. Simple examples are presented to illustrate the new approaches. Detailed computational results on the implementation of both versions of the algorithm can be found in the companion paper in chapter 4.

The amount of safety stock to hold at each stage in a supply chain is an important problem for a manufacturing company that faces uncertain demand and needs to provide a high level of service to its customers. The amount of stock held should be small to minimize holding and storage costs while retaining the ability to serve customers on time and satisfy most, if not all, of the demand. This thesis analyzes this problem by utilizing the framework of deterministic service time models and provides an algorithm for safety stock placement in generalnetwork supply chains. We first show that the general problem is NPhard. Next, we develop several conditions that characterize an optimal solution of the generalnetwork problem. We find that we can identify all possible candidates for the optimal service times for a stage by constructing paths from the stage to each other stage in the supply chain. We use this construct, namely these paths, as the basis for a branch and bound algorithm for the generalnetwork problem. A branch and bound algorithm for computing globally optimal solutions to nonconvex nonlinear programs in continuous variables is presented. The algorithm is directly suitable for a wide class of problems arising in chemical engineering design. It can solve problems defined using algebraic functions and twice differentiable transcendental functions, in which finite upper and lower bounds can be placed on each variable. The algorithm uses rectangular partitions of the variable domain and a new bounding program based on convex/concave envelopes and positive definite combinations of quadratic terms. The algorithm is deterministic and obtains convergence with final regions of finite size. The partitioning strategy uses a sensitivity analysis of the bounding program to predict the best variable to split and the split location.
