Action structures are proposed as a variety of algebra to underlie concrete models of concurrency and interaction. An action structure is equipped with composition and product of actions, together with two other ingredients: an indexed family of abstractors to allow parametrisation of actions, and a reaction relation to represent activity. The eight axioms of an action structure make it an enriched strict monoidal category; however, the work is presented algebraically rather than in category theory. The notion of action structure is developed mathematically, and examples are studied ranging from the evaluation of expressions to the statics and dynamics of Petri nets. For algebraic process calculi in particular, it is shown how they may be defined by a uniform superposition of process structure upon an action structure specific to each calculus. A functorial treatment of factorization structures is presented, under extensive use of wellpointed endofunctors. Actually, socalled weak factorization systems are interpreted as pointed lax indexed endofunctors, and this sheds new light on the correspondence between reflective subcategories and factorization systems. The second part of the paper presents two important factorization structures in the context of pointed endofunctors: concordantdissonant and inseparableseparable.

Toposes and quasitoposes have been shown to be useful in mathematics, logic and computer science. Because of this, it is important to understand the di#erent ways in which they can be constructed. Realizability toposes and presheaf toposes are two important classes of toposes. All of the former and many of the latter arise by adding "good " quotients of equivalence relations to a simple category with finite limits. This construction is called the exact completion of the original category. Exact completions are not always toposes and it was not known, not even in the realizability and presheaf cases, when or why toposes arise in this way. There has recently been considerable interest in the development of `logical frameworks ' which can represent many of the logics arising in computer science in a uniform way. Within the Edinburgh LF project, this concept is split into two components; the first being a general proof theoretic encoding of logics, and the second a uniform treatment of their model theory. This thesis forms a case study for the work on model theory. The models of many first and higher order logics can be represented as fibred or indexed categories with certain extra structure, and this has been suggested as a general paradigm. The aim of the thesis is to test the strength and flexibility of this paradigm by studying the specific case of Girard's linear logic. It should be noted that the exact form of this logic in the first order case is not entirely certain, and the system treated here is significantly different to that considered by Girard.

We represent state machines in the category of specifications, where assignment statements correspond exactly to interpretations be tween theories [7, 8]. However, the guards on an assignment require a special construction. In this paper we raise guards to the same level as assignments by treating each as a distinct category over a shared set of objects. A guarded assignment is represented as a pair of arrows, a guard at'row and an assignment arrow. We give a general construction for combining at'rows over a factorization system, and show its specialization to the category of specifications. This construction allows us to define the fine structure of state machine morphisms with respect to guards.

Term rewriting systems are widely used throughout computer science as they provide an abstract model of computation while retaining a comparatively simple syntax and semantics. In order to reason within large term rewriting systems, structuring operations are used to build large term rewriting systems from smaller ones. Of particular interest is whether key properties are modular, thatis,ifthe components of a structured term rewriting system satisfy a property, then does the term rewriting system as a whole? A body of literature addresses this problem, but most of the results and proofs depend on strong syntactic conditions and do not easily generalize. Although many specific modularity results are known, a coherent framework which explains the underlying principles behind these results is lacking. This thesis posits that part of the problem is the usual, concrete and syntaxoriented semantics of term rewriting systems, and that a semantics is needed which on the one hand elides unnecessary syntactic details but on the other hand still possesses enough expressive power to model the key concepts arising from
