. A general construction of models of callbyvalue from models of callbyname computation is described. The construction makes essential use of the properties of sum types in common denotational models of callbyname. When applied to categories of games, it yields fully abstract models of the callbyvalue functional language PCFv , which can be extended to incorporate recursive types, and of a language with local references as in Standard ML. 1 Introduction In recent years game semantics has emerged as a novel and intuitively appealing approach to modelling programming languages. Its first success was in providing a syntaxfree description of a fully abstract model of PCF [10, 1, 15]; full abstraction results have also been obtained for untyped and recursively typed functional languages, as well as languages with imperative features [12, 3]. However, none of this work addressed the problem of modelling callbyvalue languagesa major shortcoming, given that many reallife langua...

. We present a general semantic universe of callbyvalue computation based on elements of game semantics, and validate its appropriateness as a semantic universe by the full abstraction result for callbyvalue PCF, a generic typed programming language with callbyvalue evaluation. The key idea is to consider the distinction between callbyname and callbyvalue as that of the structure of information flow, which determines the basic form of games. In this way the callbyname computation and callbyvalue computation arise as two independent instances of sequential functional computation with distinct algebraic structures. We elucidate the type structures of the universe following the standard categorical framework developed in the context of domain theory. Mutual relationship between the presented category of games and the corresponding callbyname universe is also clarified. 1. Introduction The callbyvalue is a mode of calling procedures widely used in imperative and function...

Plotkin has advocated the combination of linear lambda calculus, polymorphism and fixed point recursion as an expressive semantic metalanguage. We study its expressive power from an operational point of view. We show that the naturally callbyvalue operators of linear lambda calculus can be given a callbyname semantics without affecting termination at exponential types and hence without affecting ground contextual equivalence. This result is used to prove properties of a logical relation that provides a new extensional characterisation of ground contextual equivalence and relational parametricity properties of polymorphic types.

Department of Computer Science Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science University of Edinburgh, The King's Buildings Edinburgh EH9 3JZ, Scotland Abstract We study the enrichment of models of axiomatic domain theory. To this end, we introduce a new and broader notion of domain, viz. that of complete cuboidal set, that complies with the axiomatic requirements. We show that the category of complete cuboidal sets provides a general notion of enrichment for a wide class of axiomatic domaintheoretic structures. Introduction The aim of Axiomatic Domain Theory (ADT) is to provide a conceptual understanding of why domains are adequate as mathematical models of computation. (For a discussion see [12, x Axiomatic Domain Theory ].) The approach taken is to axiomatise the structure needed on a category so that its objects can be considered as domains, and its maps as continuous...

ion and PCF John Longley Gordon Plotkin March 15, 1996 Abstract We introduce the concept of logical full abstraction, generalising the usual equational notion. We consider the language PCF and two extensions with "parallel" operations. The main result is that, for standard interpretations, logical full abstraction is equivalent to equational full abstraction together with universality; the proof involves constructing enumeration operators. We also consider restrictions on logical complexity and on the level of types. 1 Introduction The study of denotational semantics seeks to provide mathematical descriptions of programming languages by giving denotations of programs in terms of previously understood mathematical structures. For example, if P is a program that takes an input and produces an output, we might take its denotation to be a function from a set of inputvalues to a set of outputvalues. The most widelyknown approach to denotational semantics is that of traditiona...

We motivate and define a category of topological domains, whose objects are certain topological spaces, generalising the usual ωcontinuous dcppos of domain theory. Our category supports all the standard constructions of domain theory, including the solution of recursive domain equations. It also supports the construction of free algebras for (in)equational theories, can be used as the basis for a theory of computability, and provides a model of parametric polymorphism.

. We study the longstanding problem of semantics for input /output (I/O) expressed using sideeffects. Our vehicle is a small higherorder imperative language, with operations for interactive character I/O and based on ML syntax. Unlike previous theories, we present both operational and denotational semantics for I/O effects. We use a novel labelled transition system that uniformly expresses both applicative and imperative computation. We make a standard definition of bisimilarity and prove it is a congruence using Howe's method. Next, we define a metalogical type theory M in which we may give a denotational semantics to O. M generalises Crole and Pitts' FIXlogic by adding in a parameterised recursive datatype, which is used to model I/O. M comes equipped both with judgements of equality of expressions, and an operational semantics; M itself is given a domaintheoretic semantics in the category CPPO of cppos (bottompointed posets with joins of !chains) and Scott continuous functions...
