The purpose of this paper is to discuss the scope and functionality of a versatile environment for testing small and large-scale nonlinear optimization algorithms. Although many of these facilities were originally produced by the authors in conjunction with the software package LANCELOT, we believe that they will be useful in their own right and should be available to researchers for their development of optimization software. The tools are available by anonymous ftp from a number of sources and may, in many cases, be installed automatically. The scope of a major collection of test problems written in the standard input format (SIF) used by the LANCELOT software package is described. Recognising that most software was not written with the SIF in mind, we provide tools to assist in building an interface between this input format and other optimization packages. Abstract. Nonmonotone projected gradient techniques are considered for the minimization of differentiable functions on closed convex sets. The classical projected gradient schemes are extended to include a nonmonotone steplength strategy that is based on the Grippo–Lampariello–Lucidi nonmonotone line search. In particular, the nonmonotone strategy is combined with the spectral gradient choice of steplength to accelerate the convergence process. In addition to the classical projected gradient nonlinear path, the feasible spectral projected gradient is used as a search direction to avoid additional trial projections during the one-dimensional search process. Convergence properties and extensive numerical results are presented.

Logistic regression with ℓ1 regularization has been proposed as a promising method for feature selection in classification problems. In this paper we describe an efficient interior-point method for solving large-scale ℓ1-regularized logistic regression problems. Small problems with up to a thousand or so features and examples can be solved in seconds on a PC; medium sized problems, with tens of thousands of features and examples, can be solved in tens of seconds (assuming some sparsity in the data). A variation on the basic method, that uses a preconditioned conjugate gradient method to compute the search step, can solve very large problems, with a million features and examples (e.g., the 20 Newsgroups data set), in a few minutes, on a PC. Using warm-start techniques, a good approximation of the entire regularization path can be computed much more efficiently than by solving a family of problems independently.

We present a primal-dual interior-point algorithm with a filter line-search method for nonlinear programming. Local and global convergence properties of this method were analyzed in previous work. Here we provide a comprehensive description of the algorithm, including the feasibility restoration phase for the filter method, second-order corrections, and inertia correction of the KKT matrix. Heuristics are also considered that allow faster performance. This method has been implemented in the IPOPT code, which we demonstrate in a detailed numerical study based on 954 problems from the CUTEr test set. An evaluation is made of several line-search options, and a comparison is provided with two state-of-the-art interior-point codes for nonlinear programming.

Abstract. This paper describes a software implementation of Byrd and Omojokun’s trust region algorithm for solving nonlinear equality constrained optimization problems. The code is designed for the efficient solution of large problems and provides the user with a variety of linear algebra techniques for solving the subproblems occurring in the algorithm. Second derivative information can be used, but when it is not available, limited memory quasi-Newton approximations are made. The performance of the code is studied using a set of difficult test problems from the CUTE collection.

We describe a new method for determining component values and transistor dimensions for CMOS operational ampli ers (op-amps). We observe that a wide variety of design objectives and constraints have a special form, i.e., they are posynomial functions of the design variables. As a result the ampli er design problem can be expressed as a special form of optimization problem called geometric programming, for which very e cient global optimization methods have been developed. As a consequence we can e ciently determine globally optimal ampli er designs, or globally optimal trade-o s among competing performance measures such aspower, open-loop gain, and bandwidth. Our method therefore yields completely automated synthesis of (globally) optimal CMOS ampli ers, directly from speci cations. In this paper we apply this method to a speci c, widely used operational ampli er architecture, showing in detail how to formulate the design problem as a geometric program. We compute globally optimal trade-o curves relating performance measures such as power dissipation, unity-gain bandwidth, and open-loop gain. This method can be implemented with either sparse Cholesky factorization or conjugate gradient computation. This paper describes an active-set algorithm for large-scale nonlinear programming based on the successive linear programming method proposed by Fletcher and Sainz de la Maza [10]. The step computation is performed in two stages. In the first stage a linear program is solved to estimate the active set at the solution. The linear program is obtained by making a linear approximation to the ` 1 penalty function inside a trust region. In the second stage, an equality constrained quadratic program (EQP) is solved involving only those constraints that are active at the solution of the linear program.

This report tells how to make solvers work with AMPL's solve command. It describes an interface library, amplsolver.a, whose source is available from netlib. Examples include programs for listing LPs, automatic conversion to the LP dual (shellscript as solver), solvers for various nonlinear problems (with first and sometimes second derivatives computed by automatic differentiation), and getting C or Fortran 77 for nonlinear constraints, objectives and their first derivatives. Drivers for various well known linear, mixed-integer, and nonlinear solvers provide more examples.
