This paper describes a novel technique for the synthesis of imperative programs. Automated program synthesis has the potential to make programming and the design of systems easier by allowing programs to be specified at a higher-level than executable code. In our approach, which we call proof-theoretic synthesis, the user provides an input-output functional specification, a description of the atomic operations in the programming language, and a specification of the synthesized program’s looping structure, allowed stack space, and bound on usage of certain operations. Our technique synthesizes a program, if there exists one, that meets the inputoutput specification and uses only the given resources. The insight behind our approach is to interpret program synthesis as generalized program verification, which allows us to bring verification tools and techniques to program synthesis. Our synthesis

Knowing that a program has a bug is good, knowing its location is better, but a fix is best. We present a method to automatically locate and correct faults in a finite state system, either at the gate level or at the source level. We assume that the specification is given in Linear Temporal Logic, and state the correction problem as a game, in which the protagonist selects a faulty component and suggests alternative behavior. The basic approach is complete but as complex as synthesis. It also suffers from problems of readability: the correction may add state and logic to the system. We present two heuristics. The first avoids the doubly exponential blowup associated with synthesis by using nondeterministic automata. The second heuristic finds a memoryless strategy, which we show is an NP-complete problem. A memoryless strategy corresponds to a simple, local correction that does not add any state. The drawback of the two heuristics is that they are not complete unless the specification is an invariant. Our approach is general: the user can define what constitutes a component, and the suggested correction can be an arbitrary combinational function of the current state and the inputs. We show experimental results supporting the applicability of our approach.

We present a novel framework for automatic inference of efficient synchronization in concurrent programs, a task known to be difficult and error-prone when done manually. Our framework is based on abstract interpretation and can infer synchronization for infinite state programs. Given a program, a specification, and an abstraction, we infer synchronization that avoids all (abstract) interleavings that may violate the specification, but permits as many valid interleavings as possible. Combined with abstraction refinement, our framework can be viewed as a new approach for verification where both the program and the abstraction can be modified on-the-fly during the verification process. The ability to modify the program, and not only the abstraction, allows us to remove program interleavings not only when they are known to be invalid, but also when they cannot be verified using the given abstraction. We implemented a prototype of our approach using numerical abstractions and applied it to verify several interesting programs.

Abstract. Although the counterexample returned by a model checker can help in reproducing the symptom related to a defect, a significant amount of effort is often required for the programmer to interpret it in order to locate the cause. In this paper, we provide an automated procedure to zoom in to potential software defects by analyzing a single concrete counterexample. Our analysis relies on extracting from the counterexample a syntactic-level proof of infeasibility, i.e., a minimal set of word-level predicates that contradict with each other. The procedure uses an efficient weakest pre-condition algorithm carried out on a single concrete execution path, which is significantly more scalable than other model checking based approaches. Unlike most of the existing methods, we do not need additional execution traces other than the buggy one. We use public-domain examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of our new algorithm. 1

Testing and fault localization are very expensive software engineering tasks that have been tried to be automated. Although many successful techniques have been designed, the actual change of the code for fixing the discovered faults is still a human-only task. Even in the ideal case in which automated tools could tell us exactly where the location of a fault is, it is not always trivial how to fix the code. In this paper we analyse the possibility of automating the complex task of fixing faults. We propose to model this task as a search problem, and hence to use for example evolutionary algorithms to solve it. We then discuss the potential of this approach and how its current limits can be addressed in the future. This task is extremely challenging and mainly unexplored in literature. Hence, this paper only covers an initial investigation and gives directions for future work. A research prototype called JAFF and a case study are presented to give first validation of this approach.

Program reasoning consists of the tasks of automatically and statically verifying correctness and inferring properties of programs. Program synthesis is the task of automatically generating programs. Both program reasoning and synthesis are theoretically undecidable, but the results in this dissertation show that they are practically tractable. We show that there is enough structure in programs written by human developers to make program reasoning feasible, and additionally we can leverage program reasoning technology for automatic program synthesis. This dissertation describes expressive and efficient techniques for program reasoning and program synthesis. Our techniques work by encoding the underlying inference tasks as solutions to satisfiability instances. A core ingredient in the reduction of these problems to finite satisfiability instances is the assumption of templates. Templates are user-provided hints about the structural form of the desired artifact, e.g., invariant, pre- and postcondition templates for reasoning; or program templates for synthesis. We propose novel algorithms, parameterized by suitable templates, that reduce the inference of these artifacts to satisfiability. We show that fixed-point computation—the key technical challenge in program reasoning— is encodable as SAT instances. We also show that program synthesis can be viewed as generalized

In this paper we introduce the basic methodology for analyzing and debugging programs. We first convert programs into their loop-free equivalents and from this into the static single assignment form. From the static single assignment form we derive a corresponding constraint satisfaction problem. The constraint representation can be directly used for debugging. From the corresponding hyper-tree representation of the constraint satisfaction problem we compute the hyper-tree width which characterizes the complexity of finding a solution for the constraint satisfaction problem. Since constraint satisfaction can be effectively used for diagnosis the conversion can be used for debugging and the obtained hyper-tree width is an indicator of the debugging complexity.
