The capacity to estimate the head pose of another person is a common human ability that presents a unique challenge for computer vision systems. Compared to face detection and recognition, which have been the primary foci of face-related vision research, identity-invariant head pose estimation has fewer rigorously evaluated systems or generic solutions. In this paper, we discuss the inherent difficulties in head pose estimation and present an organized survey describing the evolution of the field. Our discussion focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and spans 90 of the most innovative and characteristic papers that have been published on this topic. We compare these systems by focusing on their ability to estimate coarse and fine head pose, highlighting approaches that are well suited for unconstrained environments.

We propose a new method to quickly and accurately predict 3D positions of body joints from a single depth image, using no temporal information. We take an object recognition approach, designing an intermediate body parts representation that maps the difficult pose estimation problem into a simpler per-pixel classification problem. Our large and highly varied training dataset allows the classifier to estimate body parts invariant to pose, body shape, clothing, etc. Finally we generate confidence-scored 3D proposals of several body joints by reprojecting the classification result and finding local modes. The system runs at 200 frames per second on consumer hardware. Our evaluation shows high accuracy on both synthetic and real test sets, and investigates the effect of several training parameters. We achieve state of the art accuracy in our comparison with related work and demonstrate improved generalization over exact whole-skeleton nearest neighbor matching. 1.

The past decade has witnessed a rapid proliferation of video cameras in all walks of life and has resulted in a tremendous explosion of video content. Several applications such as content-based video annotation and retrieval, highlight extraction and video summarization require recognition of the activities occurring in the video. The analysis of human activities in videos is an area with increasingly important consequences from security and surveillance to entertainment and personal archiving. Several challenges at various levels of processing—robustness against errors in low-level processing, view and rate-invariant representations at midlevel processing and semantic representation of human activities at higher level processing—make this problem hard to solve. In this review paper, we present a comprehensive survey of efforts in the past couple of decades to address the problems of representation, recognition, and learning of human activities from video and related applications. We discuss the problem at two major levels of complexity: 1) “actions ” and 2) “activities. ” “Actions ” are characterized by simple motion patterns typically executed by a single human. “Activities ” are more complex and involve coordinated actions among a small number of humans. We will discuss several approaches and classify them according to their ability to handle varying degrees of complexity as interpreted above. We begin with a discussion of approaches to model the simplest of action classes known as atomic or primitive actions that do not require sophisticated dynamical modeling. Then, methods to model actions with more complex dynamics are discussed. The discussion then leads naturally to methods for higher level representation of complex activities.

Abstract. This paper concerns recognition of human actions under view changes. We explore self-similarities of action sequences over time and observe the striking stability of such measures across views. Building upon this key observation we develop an action descriptor that captures the structure of temporal similarities and dissimilarities within an action sequence. Despite this descriptor not being strictly view-invariant, we provide intuition and experimental validation demonstrating the high stability of self-similarities under view changes. Self-similarity descriptors are also shown stable under action variations within a class as well as discriminative for action recognition. Interestingly, self-similarities computed from different image features possess similar properties and can be used in a complementary fashion. Our method is simple and requires neither structure recovery nor multi-view correspondence estimation. Instead, it relies on weak geometric properties and combines them with machine learning for efficient cross-view action recognition. The method is validated on three public datasets, it has similar or superior performance compared to related methods and it performs well even in extreme conditions such as when recognizing actions from top views while using side views for training only. 1

Pedestrian detection is a rapidly evolving area in computer vision with key applications in intelligent vehicles, surveillance and advanced robotics. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of the art from both methodological and experimental perspective. The first part of the paper consists of a survey. We cover the main components of a pedestrian detection system and the underlying models. The second (and larger) part of the paper contains a corresponding experimental study. We consider a diverse set of state-of-the-art systems: wavelet-based AdaBoost cascade [74], HOG/linSVM [11], NN/LRF [75] and combined shape-texture detection [23]. Experiments are performed on an extensive dataset captured on-board a vehicle driving through urban environment. The dataset includes many thousands of training samples as well as a 27 minute test sequence involving more than 20000 images with annotated pedestrian locations. We consider a generic evaluation setting and one specific to pedestrian detection on-board a vehicle. Results indicate a clear advantage of HOG/linSVM at higher image resolutions and lower processing speeds, and a superiority of the wavelet-based AdaBoost cascade approach at lower image resolutions and (near) real-time processing speeds. The dataset (8.5GB) is made public for benchmarking purposes.

This paper proposes a method for capturing the performance of a human or an animal from a multi-view video sequence. Given an articulated template model and silhouettes from a multi-view image sequence, our approach recovers not only the movement of the skeleton, but also the possibly non-rigid temporal deformation of the 3D surface. While large scale deformations or fast movements are captured by the skeleton pose and approximate surface skinning, true small scale deformations or non-rigid garment motion are captured by fitting the surface to the silhouette. We further propose a novel optimization scheme for skeleton-based pose estimation that exploits the skeleton’s tree structure to split the optimization problem into a local one and a lower dimensional global one. We show on various sequences that our approach can capture the 3D motion of animals and humans accurately even in the case of rapid movements and wide apparel like skirts. 1.

In this work we present an approach for markerless motion capture (MoCap) of articulated objects, which are recorded with multiple unsynchronized moving cameras. Instead of using fixed (and expensive) hardware synchronized cameras, this approach allows us to track people with off-the-shelf handheld video cameras. To prepare a sequence for motion capture, we first reconstruct the static background and the position of each camera using Structure-from-Motion (SfM). Then the cameras are registered to each other using the reconstructed static background geometry. Camera synchronization is achieved via the audio streams recorded by the cameras in parallel. Finally, a markerless MoCap approach is applied to recover positions and joint configurations of subjects. Feature tracks and dense background geometry are further used to stabilize the MoCap. The experiments show examples with highly challenging indoor and outdoor scenes. 1.

This work proposes a way to use a-priori knowledge on motion dynamics for markerless human motion capture (MoCap). Specifically, we match tracked motion patterns to training patterns in order to predict states in successive frames. Thereby, modeling the motion by means of twists allows for a proper scaling of the prior. Consequently, there is no need for training data of different frame rates or velocities. Moreover, the method allows to combine very different motion patterns. Experiments in indoor and outdoor scenarios demonstrate the continuous tracking of familiar motion patterns in case of artificial frame drops or in situations insufficiently constrained by the image data. 1.

Actions are spatio-temporal patterns which can be characterized by collections of spatio-temporal invariant features. Detection of actions is to find the re-occurrences (e.g. through pattern matching) of such spatio-temporal patterns. This paper addresses two critical issues in pattern matching-based action detection: (1) efficiency of pattern search in 3D videos and (2) tolerance of intra-pattern variations of actions. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we propose a discriminative pattern matching called naive-Bayes based mutual information maximization (NBMIM) for multi-class action categorization. It improves the stateof-the-art results on standard KTH dataset. Second, a novel search algorithm is proposed to locate the optimal subvolume in the 3D video space for efficient action detection. Our method is purely data-driven and does not rely on object detection, tracking or background subtraction. It can well handle the intra-pattern variations of actions such as scale and speed variations, and is insensitive to dynamic and clutter backgrounds and even partial occlusions. The experiments on versatile datasets including KTH and CMU action datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. 1.

This paper addresses recognition of human actions under view changes. We explore self-similarities of action sequences over time and observe the striking stability of such measures across views. Building upon this key observation, we develop an action descriptor that captures the structure of temporal similarities and dissimilarities within an action sequence. Despite this temporal self-similarity descriptor not being strictly view-invariant, we provide intuition and experimental validation demonstrating its high stability under view changes. Self-similarity descriptors are also shown stable under performance variations within a class of actions, when individual speed fluctuations are ignored. If required, such fluctuations between two different instances of the same action class can be explicitly recovered with dynamic time warping, as will be demonstrated, to achieve cross-view action synchronization. More central to present work, temporal ordering of local selfsimilarity descriptors can simply be ignored within a bag-offeatures type of approach. Sufficient action discrimination is still retained this way to build a view-independent action recognition system. Interestingly, self-similarities computed from different image features possess similar properties and can be used in a complementary fashion. Our method is simple and requires neither structure recovery nor multi-view correspondence estimation. Instead, it relies on weak geometric properties and combines them with machine learning for efficient cross-view action recognition. The method is validated on three public datasets.
