In this paper, we compared four self-developed user interfaces that display document search results using different methods. The two information elements that we used in order to create the four interfaces were document categories and lines from the document. A user study conducted compared our four interfaces. The study showed that the category addition to the interface is beneficial in both objective and subjective measures. It also showed that displaying the relevant lines from the document instead of its first lines increases the effectiveness and shorten the search time in all cases and tasks.

Search results retrieved from textual databases may be presented in several ways. In commercial search engines, the most common method is the presentation of a list that includes the titles of the retrieved documents, and, sometimes, the first few lines of each document and additional information. A series of studies at the Hebrew University examined the impact of different textual elements presented to the user on the effectiveness of the search. In the current experiment, presentation of search results in the Google-based Yahoo! interface was compared to presentation of search results in the LCC&K (Line in Context, Categories, & Keywords) interface that was developed consequent to the findings of a previous series of studies. The findings indicate a distinct advantage to the LCC&K interface in terms of objective components (such as duration of search time), and subjective components (such as the user's increasing sense of co nfidence as the search progressed that it would yield the correct answer, the user's sense of comfort, the extent to which the interface can mislead the user, etc.). This paper will address the experiment process and its findings.

Contemporary information databases contain millions of electronic documents. The immense number of documents makes it difficult to conduct efficient searches on the Internet. Several studies have found that associating documents with a subject or list of topics can make them easier to locate online [5] [6] [7]. Effective cataloging of information is performed manually, requiring extensive resources. Consequently, at present most information is not cataloged. This paper will present the findings of a study based on a software tool (TextAnalysis) that automatically identifies the subject of a document. We tested documents in two subject categories: geography and family studies. The present study follows an earlier one that examined the subject categories of industrial management and general management.

This article displays the results of a comparative study between various user interfaces whose purpose is finding search results from textual databases. This study is one of a series which were carried out at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem where this study focuses on the affect of the display of elements from textual documents which were discovered as a result of the search activity and the effect on the behavior of the users of the system. The findings of the study show a clear advantage for the interface developed for the experiment which includes display of lines which fulfill the search criteria in combination with key words from the body of the document. The advantage of the interface is expressed in everything relating to ease for the user, his feeling of confidence during performing the task and his feeling with respect to the relevance of the information displayed for performing his task. Keywords: Information display, search results, task relevancy 2 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 ...
