In this paper we present a new semantics, called Local Models Semantics, and use it to provide a foundation to reasoning with contexts. This semantics captures and makes precise the two main intuitions underlying contextual reasoning: (i) reasoning is mainly local and uses only part of what is potentially available (e.g., what is known, the available inference procedures), this part is what we call context (of reasoning); however (ii) there is compatibility among the reasoning performed in different contexts. We validate our semantics by formalizing two important forms of contextual reasoning: reasoning with viewpoints and reasoning about belief.

MultiLanguage systems (ML systems) are formal systems allowing the use of multiple distinct logical languages. In this paper we introduce a class of ML systems which use a hierarchy of first order languages, each language containing names for the language below, and propose them as an alternative to modal logics. The motivations of our proposal are technical, epistemological and implementational. From a technical point of view, we prove, among other things, that the set of theorems of the most common modal logics can be embedded (under the obvious bijective mapping between a modal and a first order language) into that of the corresponding ML systems. Moreover, we show that ML systems have properties not holding for modal logics and argue that these properties are justified by our intuitions. This claim is motivated by the study of how ML systems can be used in the representation of beliefs (more generally, propositional attitudes) and provability, two areas where modal logics have been extensively used. Finally, from an implementation point of view, we argue that ML systems resemble closely the current practice in the computer representation of propositional attitudes and metatheoretic theorem proving.

Abstract. This paper describes a corpus annotation project to study issues in the manual annotation of opinions, emotions, sentiments, speculations, evaluations and other private states in language. The resulting corpus annotation scheme is described, as well as examples of its use. In addition, the manual annotation process and the results of an inter-annotator agreement study on a 10,000-sentence corpus of articles drawn from the world press are presented.

In this paper we discuss various aspects of systematic or conventional polysemy and their formal treatment within an implemented constraint based approach to linguistic representation. We distinguish between two classes of systematic polysemy: constructional polysemy, where a single sense assigned to a lexical entry is contextually specialised, and sense extension, which predictably relates two or more senses. Formally the rst case is treated as instantiation of an underspecied lexical entry and the second by use of lexical rules. The problems of distinguishing between these two classes are discussed in detail. It is widely agreed on that most cognitive processes are contextual in the sense that they depend on the environment, or context, inside which they are carried on. Even concentrating on the issue of contextuality in reasoning, many different notions of context can be found in the Artificial Intelligence literature. Our intuition is that reasoning is usually performed on a subset of the global knowledge base. The notion of context is used as a means of formalizing this idea of localization. Roughly speaking, we take a context to be the set of facts used locally to prove a given goal plus the inference routines used to reason about them (which in general are different for different sets of facts). Our perspective is similar to that proposed in [McC87, McC91]. The goal of this paper is to propose an epistemologically adequate theory of reasoning with contexts. Children learn a variety of verbs for hand actions starting in their second year of life. The semantic distinctions can be subtle, and they vary across languages, yet they are learned quickly. Howis this possible? This dissertation explores the hypothesis that to explain the acquisition and use of action verbs, motor control must be taken into account. It presents a model of embodied semantics|based on the principles of neural computation in general and on the human motor system in particular|which takes a set of labelled actions and learns both to label novel actions and to obey verbal commands. Akey feature of the model is the executing schema, anactivecontroller mechanism which, by actually driving behavior, allows the model to carry out verbal commands. A hard-wired mechanism links the activity of executing schemas to a set of linguistically important features including hand posture, joint motions, force, aspect and goals. The feature set is relatively small and is xed, helping to make learning tractable. Moreover, the use of traditional feature structures facilitates the use of model merging, a Bayesian probabilistic learning algorithm which rapidly learns plausible word meanings, automatically determines an appropriate number of senses for each verb, and can plausibly be mapped to a connectionist recruitment

In this paper, we criticise the objectivistic approach that underlies most current systems for Knowledge Management. We show that such an approach is incompatible with the very nature of what is to be managed (i.e., knowledge), and we argue that this may partially explain why most knowledge management systems are deserted by users. We propose a different approach - called distributed knowledge management - in which subjective and social (in a word, contextual) aspects of knowledge are seriously taken into account. Finally, we present a general technological architecture in which these ideas are implemented by introducing the concept of knowledge node.
