This dissertation describes a number of algorithms developed to increase the robustness of automatic speech recognition systems with respect to changes in the environment. These algorithms attempt to improve the recognition accuracy of speech recognition systems when they are trained and tested in different acoustical environments, and when a desk-top microphone (rather than a close-talking microphone) is used for speech input. A tutorial on the design and development of automatic speaker-recognition systems is presented. Automatic speaker recognition is the use of a machine to recognize a person from a spoken phrase. These systems can operate in two modes: to identify a particular person or to verify a person’s claimed identity. Speech processing and the basic components of automatic speakerrecognition systems are shown and design tradeoffs are discussed. Then, a new automatic speaker-recognition system is given. This recognizer performs with 98.9 % correct identification. Last, the performances of various systems are compared.

Multi-modal person identity authentication is gaining more and more attention in the biometrics area. Combining different modalities increases the performance and robustness of identity authentication systems. The authentication problem is a binary classification problem. The fusion of different modalities can be therefore performed by binary classifiers. We propose to evaluate different binary classification schemes (SVM, MLP, C4.5, Fisher's linear discriminant, Bayesian classifier) on a large database (295 subjects) containing audio and video data. The identity authentication is based on two modalities: face and speech.

This paper gives an overview of automatic speaker recognition technology, with an emphasis on text-independent recognition. Speaker recognition has been studied actively for several decades. We give an overview of both the classical and the state-of-the-art methods. We start with the fundamentals of automatic speaker recognition, concerning feature extraction and speaker modeling. We elaborate advanced computational techniques to address robustness and session variability. The recent progress from vectors towards supervectors opens up a new area of exploration and represents a technology trend. We also provide an overview of this recent development and discuss the evaluation methodology of speaker recognition systems. We conclude the paper with discussion on future directions.

In practical applications of pattern recognition, there are often different features extracted from raw data which needs recognizing. Methods of combining multiple classifiers with different features are viewed as a general problem in various application areas of pattern recognition. In this paper, a systematic investigation has been made and possible solutions are classified into three frameworks, i.e. linear opinion pools, winnertake -all and evidential reasoning. For combining multiple classifiers with different features, a novel method is presented in the framework of linear opinion pools and a modified training algorithm for associative switch is also proposed in the framework of winner-take-all. In the framework of evidential reasoning, several typical methods are briefly reviewed for use. All aforementioned methods have already been applied to text-independent speaker identification. Identity verification systems are an important part of our every day life. A typical example is the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) which employs a simple identity verification scheme: the user is asked to enter their secret password after inserting their ATM card; if the password matches the one prescribed to the card, the user is allowed access to their bank account. This scheme suffers from a major drawback: only the validity of the combination of a certain possession (the ATM card) and certain knowledge (the password) is verified. The ATM card can be lost or stolen, and the password can be compromised. Thus new verification methods have emerged, where the password has either been replaced by, or used in addition to, biometrics such as the person's speech, face image or fingerprints. Apart from the ATM example described above, biometrics can be applied to other areas, such as telephone & internet based banking, airline reservations & check-in, as well as forensic work and law enforcement applications. Abstract—When automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speaker verification (SV) are applied in adverse acoustic environments, endpoint detection and energy normalization can be crucial to the functioning of both systems. In low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and nonstationary environments, conventional approaches to endpoint detection and energy normalization often fail and ASR performances usually degrade dramatically. The purpose of this paper is to address the endpoint problem. For ASR, we propose a real-time approach. It uses an optimal filter plus a three-state transition diagram for endpoint detection. The filter is designed utilizing several criteria to ensure accuracy and robustness. It has almost invariant response at various background noise levels. The detected endpoints are then applied to energy normalization sequentially. Evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the string error rates in low SNR situations. The reduction rates even exceed 50 % in several evaluated databases. For SV, we propose a batch-mode approach. It uses the optimal filter plus a two-mixture energy model for endpoint detection. The experiments show that the batch-mode algorithm can detect endpoints as accurately as using HMM forced alignment while the proposed one has much less computational complexity.
