An (n; s) DavenportSchinzel sequence, for positive integers n and s, is a sequence composed of n distinct symbols with the properties that no two adjacent elements are equal, and that it does not contain, as a (possibly noncontiguous) subsequence, any alternation a \Delta \Delta \Delta b \Delta \Delta \Delta a \Delta \Delta \Delta b \Delta \Delta \Delta of length s + 2 between two distinct symbols a and b. The close relationship between DavenportSchinzel sequences and the combinatorial structure of lower envelopes of collections of functions make the sequences very attractive because a variety of geometric problems can be formulated in terms of lower envelopes. A nearlinear bound on the maximum length of DavenportSchinzel sequences enable us to derive sharp bounds on the combinatorial structure underlying various geometric problems, which in turn yields efficient algorithms for these problems.

A fast algoritbm for finding dominators in a flowgraph is presented. The algorithm uses depthfirst search and an efficient method of computing functions defined on paths in trees. A simple implementation of the algorithm runs in O(m log n) time, where m is the number of edges and n is the number of vertices in the problem graph. A more sophisticated implementation runs in O(ma(m, n)) time, where a(m, n) is a functional inverse of Ackermann's function. Both versions of the algorithm were implemented in Algol W, a Stanford University version of Algol, and tested on an IBM 370/168. The programs were compared with an implementation by Purdom and Moore of a straightforward O(mn)time algorithm, and with ~a bit vector algorithm described by Aho and Ullman. The fast algorithm beat the straightforward algorithm and the bit vector algorithm on all but the smallest graphs tested.

We consider the problem of preprocessing an nvertex digraph with real edge weights so that subsequent queries for the shortest path or distance between any two vertices can be efficiently answered. We give algorithms that depend on the treewidth of the input graph. When the treewidth is a constant, our algorithms can answer distance queries in O(ff(n)) time after O(n) preprocessing. This improves upon previously known results for the same problem. We also give a dynamic algorithm which, after a change in an edge weight, updates the data structure in time O(n fi ), for any constant 0 ! fi ! 1. Furthermore, an algorithm of independent interest is given: computing a shortest path tree, or finding a negative cycle in linear time.

We show, via both a priority construction and a forcing construction, that there is a function of incomplete degree that dominates almost all degrees. Abstract. Finding an equilibrium of an extensive form game of imperfect information is a fundamental problem in computational game theory, but current techniques do not scale to large games. To address this, we introduce the ordered game isomorphism and the related ordered game isomorphic abstraction transformation. For a multiplayer sequential game of imperfect information with observable actions and an ordered signal space, we prove that any Nash equilibrium in an abstracted smaller game, obtained by one or more applications of the transformation, can be easily converted into a Nash equilibrium in the original game. We present an algorithm, GameShrink, for abstracting the game using our isomorphism exhaustively. Its complexity is Õ(n2), where n is the number of nodes in a structure we call the signal tree. It is no larger than the game tree, and on nontrivial games it is drastically smaller, so GameShrink has time and space complexity sublinear in the size of the game tree. Using GameShrink, we find an equilibrium to a poker game with 3.1 billion nodes—over four orders of magnitude more than in the largest poker game solved previously. To address even larger games, we introduce approximation methods that do not preserve equilibrium, but nevertheless yield (ex post) provably closetooptimal strategies.

Progress in the foundations of mathematics has made it possible to formulate all thinkable mathematical concepts, algorithms and proofs in one language and in an impeccable way. This is not in spite of, but partially based on the famous results of Gödel and Turing. In this way statements are about mathematical objects and algorithms, proofs show the correctness of statements and computations, and computations are dealing with objects and proofs. Interactive computer systems for a full integration of defining, computing and proving are based on this. The human defines concepts, constructs algorithms and provides proofs, while the machine checks that the definitions are wellformed and the proofs and computations are correct. Results formalised so far demonstrate the feasibility of this ‘Computer Mathematics’. Also there are very good applications. The challenge is to make the systems more mathematicianfriendly, by building libraries and tools. The eventual goal is to help humans to learn, develop, communicate, referee and apply mathematics.

This theorem includes as special cases the two techniques discussed by Knuth [12] and Bird [7]. Recall that RT is the upper semilattice of recursively enumerable Turing degrees. We consider two fundamental, classical, unresolved issues concerning RT. The first issue is to find a specific, natural, recursively enumerable Turing degree a ∈ RT which is> 0 and < 0 ′. The second issue is to find a “smallness property ” of an infinite, corecursively enumerable set A ⊆ ω which ensures that the Turing degree deg T (A) = a ∈ RT is> 0 and < 0 ′. In order to address these issues, we embed RT into a slightly larger degree structure, Pw, which is much better behaved. Namely, Pw is the lattice of weak degrees of mass problems associated with nonempty Π 0 1 subsets of 2 ω. We define a specific, natural embedding of RT into Pw, and we present some recent and new research results.
