Research on ontology is becoming increasingly widespread in the computer science community, and its importance is being recognized in a multiplicity of research fields and application areas, including knowledge engineering, database design and integration, information retrieval and extraction. We shall use the generic term information systems, in its broadest sense, to collectively refer to these application perspectives. We argue in this paper that so-called ontologies present their own methodological and architectural peculiarities: on the methodological side, their main peculiarity is the adoption of a highly interdisciplinary approach, while on the architectural side the most interesting aspect is the centrality of the role they can play in an information system, leading to the perspective of ontology-driven information systems.

We review the use on ontologies for the integration of heterogeneous information sources. Based on an in-depth evaluation of existing approaches to this problem we discuss how ontologies are used to support the integration task. We evaluate and compare the languages used to represent the ontologies and the use of mappings between ontologies as well as to connect ontologies with information sources. We also enquire into ontology engineering methods and tools used to develop ontologies for information integration. Based on the results of our analysis we summarize the state-of-the-art in ontology-based information integration and name areas of further research activities.

Most enterprises agree that knowledge is an essential asset for success and survival on a increasingly competitive and global market. This awareness is one of the main reasons for the exponential growth of knowledge management in the past decade. Our approach to knowledge management is based on ontologies, and makes knowledge assets intelligently accessible to people in organizations. Most company-vital knowledge resides in the heads of people, and thus successful knowledge management does not only consider technical aspects, but also social ones. In this paper, we describe an approach to intelligent knowledge management that explicitly takes into account the social issues involved. The proof of concept is given by a large-scale initiative involving knowledge management of a virtual organization.

Although software measurement plays an increasingly important role in Software Engineering, there is no consensus yet on many of the concepts and terminology used in this field. Even worse, vocabulary conflicts and inconsistencies can be frequently found amongst the many sources and references commonly used by software measurement researchers and practitioners. This article presents an analysis of the current situation, and provides a comparison framework that can be used to identify and address the discrepancies, gaps, and terminology conflicts that current software measurement proposals present. A basic software measurement ontology is introduced, that aims at contributing to the harmonization of the different software measurement proposals and standards, by providing a coherent set of common concepts used in software measurement. The ontology is also aligned with the metrology vocabulary used in other more mature measurement engineering disciplines. Key words: Software measurement, measurement terminology 1

Different proposals exist to represent the software maintenance process. However most of them are very informal or too focussed on a specific goal. We have developed a semi-formal ontology where the main concepts, according to the literature related to software maintenance, have been described. This ontology, besides representing static aspects, also represents dynamic issues related to the management of software maintenance projects. In order to develop an ontology a suitable methodology should also be followed. REFSENO was the methodology used in this work. The ontology that this work presents is not a preliminary idea but it has already been used in software maintenance environments, such as MANTIS, which is currently working successfully. In the emerging world of Grid Computing, shared computational, data, other distributed resources are becoming available to enable scientific advancement through collaborative research and collaboratories. This paper describes the increasing role of ontologies in the context of Grid Computing for obtaining, comparing and analyzing data. We present ontology entities and a declarative model that provide the outline for an ontology of scientific information. Relationships between concepts are also given. The implementation of some concepts described in this ontology is discussed within the context of the Earth System Grid II (ESG)[1].

This paper presents and motivates an extended ontology knowledge model which represents semantic information about concepts explicitly. This knowledge model results from enriching the standard conceptual model with semantic information which precisely characterises the concept's properties and expected ambiguities, including which properties are prototypical of a concept and which are exceptional, the behaviour of properties over time and the degree of applicability of properties to subconcepts. This enriched conceptual model permits a precise characterisation of what is represented by class membership mechanisms and helps knowledge engineers to determine, in a straightforward manner, the meta-properties holding for a concept. Meta-properties are recognised to be the main tool for a formal ontological analysis that allows building ontologies with a clean and untangled taxonomic structure. This enriched semantics can prove useful to describe what is known by agents in a multi-agent systems, as it facilitates the use of reasoning mechanisms on the knowledge that instantiate the ontology. These mechanisms can be used to solve ambiguities that can arise when heterogeneous agents have to interoperate in order to perform a task.

In this article we review knowledge representation formalisms that lend themselves to the representation of capabilities of intelligent agents. The aim of representing capabilities is, of course, that we want to reason about them. The reasoning task we are most interested in is capability brokering, i.e. the task of finding an agent which has a capability that can be used to address a given problem. Thus, the first area we review here is agent cooperation and communication from which the problem originates.

The communication between agents does not only require the exchange of syntactically defined character strings. The agents also need to have a common knowledge background. AI-Research has been pursuing ontologies as an approach of formal language which can also be used to explicate knowledge backgrounds. Ontologies gain a particularly high practical relevance in the scope of the organizational knowledge management. Therefore information systems science has an increasing interest in ontologies. Based on a definition of the term ontology, this paper examines problems of the theory of knowledge and the theory of language, which might be created in the construction of ontologies. Ontologies are interpreted as a special case of conceptual models. Thus, the content of this paper can be applied not only to the strict framework of ontologies, but also to the problems of theory of science in the area of information modeling.
