The Hausdorff distance measures the extent to which each point of a `model' set lies near some point of an `image' set and vice versa. Thus this distance can be used to determine the degree of resemblance between two objects that are superimposed on one another. In this paper we provide efficient algorithms for computing the Hausdorff distance between all possible relative positions of a binary image and a model. We focus primarily on the case in which the model is only allowed to translate with respect to the image. Then we consider how to extend the techniques to rigid motion (translation and rotation). The Hausdorff distance computation differs from many other shape comparison methods in that no correspondence between the model and the image is derived. The method is quite tolerant of small position errors as occur with edge detectors and other feature extraction methods. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the technical achievements in the research area of image retrieval, especially content-based image retrieval, an area that has been so active and prosperous in the past few years. The survey includes 100+ papers covering the research aspects of image feature representation and extraction, multidimensional indexing, and system design, three of the fundamental bases of content-based image retrieval. Furthermore, based on the state-of-the-art technology available now and the demand from real-world applications, open research issues are identified and future promising research directions are suggested. Measuring the similarity between 3D shapes is a fundamental problem, with applications in computer vision, molecular biology, computer graphics, and a variety of other fields. A challenging aspect of this problem is to find a suitable shape signature that can be constructed and compared quickly, while still discriminating between similar and dissimilar shapes. In this paper, we propose and analyze a method for computing shape signatures for arbitrary (possibly degenerate) 3D polygonal models. The key idea is to represent the signature of an object as a shape distribution sampled from a shape function measuring global geometric properties of an object. The primary motivation for this approach is to reduce the shape matching problem to the comparison of probability distributions, which is a simpler problem than the comparison of 3D surfaces by traditional shape matching methods that require pose registration, feature correspondence, or model fitting. AbstractÐA cognitively motivated similarity measure is presented and its properties are analyzed with respect to retrieval of similar objects in image databases of silhouettes of 2D objects. To reduce influence of digitization noise, as well as segmentation errors, the shapes are simplified by a novel process of digital curve evolution. To compute our similarity measure, we first establish the best possible correspondence of visual parts (without explicitly computing the visual parts). Then, the similarity between corresponding parts is computed and aggregated. We applied our similarity measure to shape matching of object contours in various image databases and compared it to well-known approaches in the literature. The experimental results justify that our shape matching procedure gives an intuitive shape correspondence and is stable with respect to noise distortions. The rapidity with which digital information, particularly video, is being generated has necessitated the development of tools for efficient search of these media. Content-based visual queries have been primarily focused on still image retrieval. In this paper, we propose a novel, interactive system on the Web, based on the visual paradigm, with spatiotemporal attributes playing a key role in video retrieval. We have developed innovative algorithms for automated video object segmentation and tracking, and use real-time video editing techniques while responding to user queries. The resulting system, called VideoQ (demo available at http://www.ctr.columbia.edu/VideoQ/), is the first on-line video search engine supporting automatic objectbased indexing and spatiotemporal queries. The system performs well, with the user being able to retrieve complex video clips such as those of skiers and baseball players with ease. Shape matching is an important ingredient in shape retrieval, recognition and classification, alignment and registration, and approximation and simplification. This paper treats various aspects that are needed to solve shape matching problems: choosing the precise problem, selecting the properties of the similarity measure that are needed for the problem, choosing the specific similarity measure, and constructing the algorithm to compute the similarity. The focus is on methods that lie close to the field of computational geometry.
