Abstract. We examine to what extent implementation of timed automata can be achieved using the standard semantics and appropriate modeling, instead of introducing new semantics. We propose an implementation methodology which allows to transform a timed automaton into a program and to check whether the execution of this program on a given platform satisfies a desired property. This is done by modeling the program and the execution platform, respectively, as an untimed automaton and a collection of timed automata. We also study the problem of property preservation, in particular when moving to a “better” execution platform. We show that some subtleties arise regarding the definition of “better”, in particular for digital clocks. The fundamental issue is that faster clocks result in better “sampling ” and therefore can introduce more behaviors. 1

We present a method of translating discrete-time Simulink models to Lustre programs. Our method consists of three steps: type inference, clock inference and hierarchical bottom-up translation. In the process, we explain and formalize the typing and timing mechanisms of Simulink. The method has been implemented in a prototype tool called S2L. The tool has been used in the context of a European research project to translate two automotive controller models provided by Audi.

Embedded systems are often modeled using Matlab’s Simulink and Stateflow (MSS), to simulate plant and controller behavior but these models lack support for formal verification. On the other hand verification techniques and tools do exist for models based on the notion of Hybrid Automata (HA) but there are no tools that can convert Simulink/Stateflow models into their semantically equivalent Hybrid Automata models. This paper describes a translation algorithm that converts a well-defined subset of the MSS modeling language into an equivalent hybrid automata. The translation has been specified and implemented using a metamodel-based graph transformation tool. The translation process allows semantic interoperability between the industry-standard MSS tools and the new verification tools developed in the research community.

Abstract. Control diagrams are routinely used by engineers in the design of control systems. Yet, currently the formal verification of programs that implement the diagrams is a challenge. We present a strategy to translate block diagrams to Circus, a notation that combines Z, CSP, and a refinement calculus. This work is based on existing tools that produce Z and CSP specifications from discrete-time block diagrams. By using a combined notation, we provide a specification that considers both functional and behavioural aspects of the diagrams, and can cover a wider range of blocks. Moreover, the Circus refinement calculus can be used to derive or verify implementations, and reason about the block diagrams.

Synchronous data-flow languages such as Lustre manage infinite sequences or streams as basic values. Each stream is associated to a clock which defines the instants where the current value of the stream is present. This clock is a type information and a dedicated type system — the so-called clock-calculus — statically rejects programs which cannot be executed synchronously. In existing synchronous languages, it amounts at asking whether two streams have the same clocks and thus relies on clock equality only. Recent works have shown the interest of introducing some relaxed notion of synchrony, where two streams can be composed as soon as they can be synchronized through the introduction of a finite buffer (as done in the SDF model of Edward Lee). This technically consists in replacing typing by subtyping. The present paper introduces a simple way to achieve this relaxed model through the use of clock envelopes. These clock envelopes are set of concrete clocks which are not necessarily periodic. This allows to model various features in real-time embedded software such as bounded jitter as found in videosystems, execution time of real-time processes and scheduling resources or the communication through buffers. We present the algebra of clock envelopes and its main theoretical properties.

In this paper we address the following problem: given an acyclic program scheme with if-then-else control structures, together with the duration of each procedure, and given an architecture consisting of n identical processors, compute offline a scheduling policy that will guarantee minimal execution time (in the worst-case) for the entire program on this architecture. Since this is a problem of scheduling under uncertainty (the results of the branching decisions are not known in advance) it cannot be solved in a satisfactory manner using static or fixed priority schedulers but rather requires a state-dependent scheduling strategy. We use timed automata technology to derive such strategies using algorithms for finding shortest paths on game graphs. 1.
