Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has become one of the most active research areas in the past few years. Many visual feature representations have been explored and many systems built. While these research efforts establish the basis of CBIR, the usefulness of the proposed approaches is limited. Specifically, these efforts have relatively ignored two distinct characteristics of CBIR systems: (1) the gap between high level concepts and low level features; (2) subjectivity of human perception of visual content. This paper proposes a relevance feedback based interactive retrieval approach, which effectively takes into account the above two characteristics in CBIR. During the retrieval process, the user's high level query and perception subjectivity are captured by dynamically updated weights based on the user's feedback. In other data servers, such as a system with queries based on image content, or many text retrieval systems, the result of a query is a sorted list. For example, in the case of a system with queries based on image content, the query might ask for objects that are a particular shade of red, and the result of the query would be a sorted list of objects in the database, sorted by how well the color of the object matches that given in the query. A multimedia system must somehow synthesize both types of queries (those whose result is a set, and those whose result is a sorted list) in a consistent manner. Distributed data processing is fast becoming a reality. Businesses want to have it for many reasons, and they often must have it in order to stay competitive. While much of the infrastructure for distributed data processing is already in place (e.g., modern network technology), there are a number of issues which still make distributed data processing a complex undertaking: (1) distributed systems can become very large involving thousands of heterogeneous sites including PCs and mainframe server machines � (2) the state of a distributed system changes rapidly because the load of sites varies over time and new sites are added to the system� (3) legacy systems need to be integrated|such legacy systems usually have not been designed for distributed data processing and now need to interact with other (modern) systems in a distributed environment. This paper presents the state of the art of query processing for distributed database and information systems. The paper presents the \textbook " architecture for distributed query processing and a series of techniques that are particularly useful for distributed database systems. These techniques include special join techniques, techniques to exploit intra-query parallelism, techniques to reduce communication costs, and techniques to exploit caching and replication of data. Furthermore, the paper discusses di erent kinds of distributed systems such as client-server, middleware (multi-tier), and heterogeneous database systems and shows how query processing works in these systems. These differences lead to interesting new issues, and in particular cause us to consider new types of queries. For example, in a multimedia database it is reasonable and natural to ask for images that are somehow "similar to" some fixed image. Furthermore, there are different ways of obtaining and accessing information in a multimedia database than information in a traditional database. For example, in a multimedia database, it might be reasonable to have a query that asks for, say, the top 10 images that are similar to a fixed image. This is in contrast to a relational database, where the answer to a query is simply a set. (Of course, in a relational database, the result to a query may be sorted in some way for convenience in presentation, such as sorting department members by salary, but logically speaking, the result is still simply a set, ...

Ranked queries return the top objects of a database according to a preference function. We present and evaluate (experimentally and theoretically) a core algorithm that answers ranked queries in an e#cient pipelined manner using materialized ranked views. We use and extend the core algorithm in the described PREFER and MERGE systems. PREFER precomputes a set of materialized views that provide guaranteed query performance. We present an algorithm that selects a near optimal set of views under space constraints. We also describe multiple optimizations and implementation aspects of the downloadable version of PREFER. Then we discuss MERGE, which operates at a meta-broker and answers ranked queries by retrieving a minimal number of objects from sources that o#er ranked queries. A speculative version of the pipelining algorithm is described.

Repositories of multimedia objects having multiple types of attributes (e.g., image, text) are becoming increasingly common. A query on these attributes will typically request not just a set of objects, as in the traditional relational query model (filtering), but also a grade of match associated with each object, which indicates how well the object matches the selection condition (ranking). Further- more, unlike in the relational model, users may just want the k top-ranked objects for their selection queries, for a relatively small k. In addition to the differences in the query model, another peculiarity of multimedia repositories is that they may allow access to the attributes of each object only through indexes. In this paper, we investigate how to optimize the processing of top-k selection queries over multimedia repositories. The access characteristics of the repositories and the above query model lead to novel issues in query optimization. In particular, the choice of the indexes used to search the repos- itory strongly influences the cost of processing the filtering condition. We define an execution space that is search-minimal, i.e., the set of indexes searched is minimal. Although the general problem of picking an optimal plan in the search-minimal execution space is NP-hard, we present an efficient algorithm that solves the problem optimally with respect to our cost model and execution space when the predicates in the query are independent. Given a set of rankings, the task of ranking fusion is the problem of combining these lists in such a way to optimize the performance of the combination. The ranking fusion problem is encountered in many situations and, e.g., metasearch is a prominent one. It deals with the problem of combining the result lists returned by multiple search engines in response to a given query, where each item in a result list is ordered with respect to a search engine and a relevance score. Several ranking fusion methods have been proposed in the literature. They can be classified based on whether: (i) they rely on the rank; (ii) they rely on the score; and (iii) they require training data or not. Our paper will make the following contributions: (i) we will report experimental results for the Markov chain rank based methods, for which no large experimental tests have yet been made; (ii) while it is believed that the rank based method, named Borda Count, is competitive with score based methods, we will show that this is not true for metasearch; and (iii) we will show that Markov chain based methods compete with score based methods. This is especially important in the context of metasearch as scores are usually not available from the search engines.
