A hierarchy of convex relaxations for semialgebraic problems is introduced. For questions reducible to a finite number of polynomial equalities and inequalities, it is shown how to construct a complete family of polynomially sized semidefinite programming conditions that prove infeasibility. The main tools employed are a semidefinite programming formulation of the sum of squares decomposition for multivariate polynomials, and some results from real algebraic geometry. The techniques provide a constructive approach for finding bounded degree solutions to the Positivstellensatz, and are illustrated with examples from diverse application fields.

Abstract. This tutorial presents a theory of valid inequalities for mixed integer linear sets. It introduces the necessary tools from polyhedral theory and gives a geometric understanding of several classical families of valid inequalities such as liftandproject cuts, Gomory mixed integer cuts, mixed integer rounding cuts, split cuts and intersection cuts, and it reveals the relationships between these families. Many nonconvex nonlinear programming (NLP) problems of practical interest involve bilinear terms and linear constraints, as well as, potentially, other convex and nonconvex terms and constraints. In such cases, it may be possible to augment the formulation with additional linear constraints (a subset of ReformulationLinearization Technique constraints) which do not a#ect the feasible region of the original NLP but tighten that of its convex relaxation to the extent that some bilinear terms may be dropped from the problem formulation. We present an e#cient graphtheoretical algorithm for e#ecting such exact reformulations of large, sparse NLPs. The global solution of the reformulated problem using spatial Branchand Bound algorithms is usually significantly faster than that of the original NLP. We illustrate this point by applying our algorithm to a set of pooling and blending global optimization problems.

A novel global optimization method based on an Augmented Lagrangian framework is introduced for continuous constrained nonlinear optimization problems. At each outer iteration k the method requires the εkglobal minimization of the Augmented Lagrangian with simple constraints, where εk → ε. Global convergence to an εglobal minimizer of the original problem is proved. The subproblems are solved using the αBB method. Numerical experiments are presented.

The authors also thank two anonymous referees and an Associate Editor for their remarks, which improved the presentation of this paper. We consider a network interdiction problem on a multicommodity flow network, in which an attacker disables a set of network arcs in order to minimize the maximum profit that can be obtained from shipping commodities across the network. The attacker is assumed to have some budget for destroying (or “interdicting”) arcs, and each arc is associated with a positive interdiction expense. In this paper, we examine problems in which interdiction must be discrete (i.e., each arc must either be left alone or completely destroyed), and in which interdiction can be continuous (the capacities of arcs may be partially reduced). For the discrete problem, we describe a linearized model for optimizing network interdiction that is similar to previous studies in the field, and compare it to a penalty model that does not require linearization constraints. For the continuous case, we prescribe an optimal partitioning algorithm along with a heuristic procedure for estimating the optimal objective function value. We demonstrate on a set of randomly generated test data that our penalty model for the discrete interdiction problem significantly reduces computational time when compared to that consumed by the linearization model. 1

The present treatment is concerned with the case when objective(s) and constraints are algebraic mathematical expressions of the parameters and decision variables, and therefore excludes optimization of blackbox functions. A reformulation of a mathematical program is a formulation which shares some properties with, but is in some sense better than, the original program. Reformulations are important with respect to the choice and efficiency of the solution algorithms; furthermore, it is desirable that reformulations can be carried out automatically. Reformulation techniques are very common in mathematical programming but interestingly they have never been studied under a common framework. This paper attempts to move some steps in this direction. We define a framework for storing and manipulating mathematical programming formulations, give several fundamental definitions categorizing reformulations in essentially four types (optreformulations, narrowings, relaxations and approximations). We establish some theoretical results and give reformulation examples for each type.

Numerical constraint systems are often handled by branch and prune algorithms that combine splitting techniques, local consistencies, and interval methods. This paper first recalls the principles of Quad, a global constraint that works on a tight and safe linear relaxation of quadratic subsystems of constraints. Then, it introduces a generalization of Quad to polynomial constraint systems. It also introduces a method to get safe linear relaxations and shows how to compute safe bounds of the variables of the linear constraint system. Different linearization techniques are investigated to limit the number of generated constraints. QuadSolver, a new branch and prune algorithm that combines Quad, local consistencies, and interval methods, is introduced. QuadSolver has been evaluated on a variety of benchmarks from kinematics, mechanics, and robotics. On these benchmarks, it outperforms classical interval methods as well as constraint satisfaction problem solvers and it compares well with stateoftheart optimization solvers.

Abstract A common way to produce a convex relaxation of a Mixed Integer Quadratically Constrained Program (MIQCP) is to lift the problem into a higher dimensional space by introducing variables Yij to represent each of the products xixj of variables appearing in a quadratic form. One advantage of such extended relaxations is that they can be efficiently strengthened by using the (convex) SDP constraint Y − xx T ≽ 0 and disjunctive programming. On the other hand, their main drawback is their huge size, even for problems of moderate size. In this paper, we study methods to build lowdimensional relaxations of MIQCP that capture the strength of the extended formulations. To do so, we use projection techniques pioneered in the context of the liftandproject methodology. We show how the extended formulation can be algorithmically projected to the original space by solving linear programs. Furthermore, we extend the technique to project the SDP relaxation by solving SDPs. In the case of an MIQCP with a single quadratic constraint, we propose a subgradientbased heuristic to efficiently solve these SDPs. We also propose a new eigen reformulation for MIQCP, and a cut generation technique to strengthen this reformulation using polarity. We present extensive computational results to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed techniques. Our computational results have two highlights. First, on the GLOBALLib instances, we are able to generate relaxations that are almost
