This work discusses three aspects of net theory: compositionality of nets, analysis of nets and highlevel nets. Net theory has often been criticised for the difficulty of giving a compositional semantics to a net. In this work we discuss this problem form a category theoretic point of view. In category theory compositionality is represented by colimits. We show how a highlevel net can be mapped into a lowlevel net that represents its behaviour. This construction is functorial and preserves colimits, giving a compositional semantics for these highlevel nets. Using this semantics we propose some proof rules for compositional reasoning with highlevel nets. Linear logic is a recently discovered logic that has many interesting properties. From a net theoretic point of view its interest lies in the fact that it is able to express resources in an analogous manner to nets. The flexibility of Petri nets that allows us the combination of components without restriction to a single general composition operator is an important advantage of Petri nets compared to other formalisms. This flexibility supports many di#erent types of component interaction, reflecting various communication paradigms. We suggest not to define the types of component interaction by adding new constructs to the language but by restricting the legal combinations between components. In this approach, general Petri net analysis techniques can still be applied to the overall model. For each component interaction type, the respective restriction is formulated in a syntactical manner, thus providing suitable communication patterns.

Among the approaches to rational software systems development the viewpoint model has become predominant. That means, models of different views or aspects of a system on different levels of abstraction are built and maintained to document the design decisions passed during all development stages. The construction of such models should be supported by adequate modelling languages or specification formalisms that allow the representation of the concerned structures, functionality, and properties directly. In order to conceive all these models as a specification of a sole system a semantic integration is required that supports the statement of correspondences of elements of di erent models and the consistency checking of groups of models. The main problem in this task is the heterogeneity of the modelling paradigms and, correspondingly, of the specification languages. The approach to the integration of heterogeneous formal specifications presented in this report is based on a formal reference model that serves as common semantic domain for the different languages. In this it way supports the comparison of models independently of the chosen languages. In the reference model formal models of dynamic entities of arbitrary granularity are defined via their static structure and their dynamic behaviour. Then development relations and composition operations are introduced and general compositionality properties are shown. In particular, structural transparency is supported, i.e., structured systems of entities can always be considered as single dynamic entities in turn. Abstract: This paper is threefold structured. The first part presents Interpreted High Level Petri Nets, a formalism to specify concurrent and discrete event systems. The second part of the paper presents a connection between Interpreted High Level Petri Nets and rulebased systems, and describes a rulebased language associated to these nets. Third, an example of using Interpreted High Level Petri Net formalism and its associated language for describing the control system for a manufacturing cell is presented.
