Abstract. In this paper, we describe a novel approach to tackle intention recognition, by combining dynamically configurable and situation-sensitive Causal Bayes Networks plus plan generation techniques. Given some situation, such networks enable recognizing agent to come up with the most likely intentions of the intending agent, i.e. solve one main issue of intention recognition; and, in case of having to make a quick decision, focus on the most important ones. Furthermore, the combination with plan generation provides a significant method to guide the recognition process with respect to hidden actions and unobservable effects, in order to confirm or disconfirm likely intentions. The absence of this articulation is a main drawback of the approaches using Bayes Networks solely, due to the combinatorial problem they encounter.

Abstract. We describe a novel approach to tackle intention recognition, by combining dynamically configurable and situation-sensitive Causal Bayes Networks plus plan generation techniques. Given some situation, such networks enable the recognizing agent to come up with the most likely intentions of the intending agent, i.e. solve one main issue of intention recognition. And, in case of having to make a quick decision, focus on the most important ones. Furthermore, the combination with plan generation provides a significant method to guide the recognition process with respect to hidden actions and unobservable effects, in order to confirm or disconfirm likely intentions. The absence of this articulation is a main drawback of the approaches using Bayes Networks solely, due to the combinatorial problem they encounter. We explore and exemplify its application, in the Elder Care context, of the ability to perform Intention Recognition and of wielding Evolution Prospection methods to help the Elder achieve its intentions. This is achieved by means of an articulate use of a Causal Bayes Network to heuristically gauge probable general intention – combined with specific generation of plans involving preferences – for checking which such intentions are plausibly being carried out in the specific situation at hand, and suggesting actions to the Elder. The overall approach is formulated within one coherent and general logic programming framework and implemented system. The paper recaps required background and illustrates the approach via an extended application example.

Given its ubiquity, scale and complexity, few problems have created the combined interest of so many unrelated areas as the evolution of cooperation. Using the tools of evolutionary game theory, here we address, for the first time, the role played by intention recognition in the final outcome of cooperation in large populations of self-regarding individuals. By equipping individuals with the capacity of assessing intentions of others in the course of repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma interactions, we show how intention recognition opens a window of opportunity for cooperation to thrive, as it precludes the invasion of pure cooperators by random drift while remaining robust against defective strategies. Intention recognizers are able to assign an intention to the action of their opponents based on an acquired corpus of possible intentions. We show how intention recognizers can prevail against most famous strategies of repeated dilemmas of cooperation, even in the presence of errors. Our approach invites the adoption of other classification and pattern recognition mechanisms common among Humans, to unveil the evolution of complex cognitive processes in the context of social dilemmas. 1

Few problems have created the combined interest of so many unrelated areas as the evolution of cooperation. As a result, several mechanisms have been identified to work as catalyzers of cooperative behavior. Yet, these studies, mostly grounded on evolutionary dynamics and game theory, have neglected the important role played by intention recognition in behavioral evolution. Here we address explicitly this issue, characterizing the dynamics emerging from a population of intention recognizers. We derive a Bayesian Network model for intention recognition in the context of repeated social dilemmas and evolutionary game theory, by assessing the internal dynamics of trust between intention recognizers and their opponents. Intention recognizers are then able to predict the next move of their opponents based on past direct interactions, which, in turn, enables them to prevail over the most famous strategies of repeated dilemmas of cooperation, even in presence of noise. Overall, our framework offers new insights on the complexity and beauty of behavioral evolution driven by elementary forms of cognition.

Abstract — This paper considers the path planning problem for an autonomous vehicle in an urban environment populated with static obstacles and moving vehicles with uncertain intents. We propose a novel threat assessment module, consisting of an intention predictor and a threat assessor, which augments the host vehicle’s path planner with a real-time threat value representing the risks posed by the estimated intentions of other vehicles. This new threat-aware planning approach is applied to the CL-RRT path planning framework, used by the MIT team in the 2007 DARPA Grand Challenge. Abstract — This paper considers the decision-making problem for a human-driven vehicle crossing a road intersection in the presence of other, potentially errant, drivers. Our approach relies on a novel threat assessment module, which combines an intention predictor based on support vector machines with an efficient threat assessor using rapidly-exploring random trees. This module warns the host driver with the computed threat level and the corresponding best “escape maneuver ” through the intersection, if the threat is sufficiently large. Through experimental results with small autonomous and human-driven vehicles, we demonstrate that this threat assessment module can be used in real-time to minimize the risk of collision. I.

We present a method for context-dependent and incremental intention recognition by means of incrementally constructing a Bayesian Network (BN) model as more actions are observed. It is achieved with the support of a knowledge base of readily maintained and constructed fragments of BNs. The simple structure of the fragments enables to easily and efficiently acquire the knowledge base, either from domain experts or automatically from a plan corpus. We exhibit experimental results improvement for the Linux Plan corpus. For additional experimentation, new plan corpora for the iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma are created. We show that taking into account contextual information considerably increases intention recognition performance. 1
