At any given time, the stability of a community depends on the right balance of trust and distrust. Furthermore, we face information overload, increased uncertainty and risk taking as a prominent feature of modern living. As members of society, we cope with these complexities and uncertainties by relying trust, which is the basis of all social interactions. Although a small number of trust models have been proposed for the virtual medium, we find that they are largely impractical and artificial. In this paper we provide and discuss a trust model that is grounded in real-world social trust characteristics, and based on a reputation mechanism, or word-of-mouth. Our proposed model allows agents to decide which other agents' opinions they trust more and allows agents to progressively tune their understanding of another agent's subjective recommendations.

This paper investigates the role of trust metrics in attack-resistant public key certification. We present an analytical framework for understanding the effectiveness of trust metrics in resisting attacks, including a characterization of the space of possible attacks. Within this framework, we establish the theoretical best case for a trust metric. The proliferation of web-based social networks has lead to new innovations in social networking, particularly by allowing users to describe their relationships beyond a basic connection. In this dissertation, I look specifically at trust in web-based social networks, how it can be computed, and how it can be used in applications. I begin with a definition of trust and a description of several properties that affect how it is used in algorithms. This is complemented by a survey of web-based social networks to gain an understanding of their scope, the types of relationship information available, and the current state of trust. The computational problem of trust is to determine how much one person in the network should trust another person to whom they are not connected. I present two sets of algorithms for calculating these trust inferences: one for networks with binary trust ratings, and one for continuous ratings. For each rating scheme, the algorithms are built upon the defined notions of trust. Each is then analyzed theoretically and with respect to simulated and actual trust networks to determine how accurately they calculate the opinions of people in the system. Semantic Web endeavors have mainly focused on issues pertaining to knowledge representation and ontology design. However, besides understanding information metadata stated by subjects, knowing about their credibility becomes equally crucial. Hence, trust and trust metrics, conceived as computational means to evaluate trust relationships between individuals, come into play. Our major contributions to Semantic Web trust management through this paper are twofold. First, we introduce our classification scheme for trust metrics along various axes and discuss advantages and drawbacks of existing approaches for Semantic Web scenarios. Hereby, we will devise our advocacy for local group trust metrics, guiding us to the second part which presents Appleseed, our novel proposal for local group trust computation. Compelling in its simplicity, Appleseed borrows many ideas from spreading activation models in psychology and relates their concepts to trust evaluation in an intuitive fashion.

Authentication using a path of trusted intermediaries, each able to authenticate the next in the path, is a well-known technique for authenticating entities in a large-scale system. Recent work has extended this technique to include multiple paths in an effort to bolster authentication, but the success of this approach may be unclear in the face of intersecting paths, ambiguities in the meaning of certificates, and interdependencies in the use of different keys. Thus, several authors have proposed metrics to evaluate the confidence afforded by a set of paths. In this paper we develop a set of guiding principles for the design of such metrics. We motivate our principles by showing how previous approaches failed with respect to these priniciples and what the consequences to authentication might be. We then propose a new metric that appears to meet our principles, and so to be a satisfactory metric of authentication.

This dissertation characterizes the space of trust metrics, under both the scalar assumption where each assertion is evaluated independently, and the group assumption where a group of assertions are evaluated in tandem. We present a quantitative framework for evaluating the attack resistance of trust metrics, and give examples of trust metrics that are within a small factor of optimum compared to theoretical upper bounds. We discuss experiences with a realworld deployment of a group trust metric, the Advogato website. Finally, we explore possible applications of attack resistant trust metrics, including using it as to build a distributed name server, verifying metadata in peer-to-peer networks such as music sharing systems, and a proposal for highly spam resistant e-mail delivery.

: We introduce Delegation Logic (DL), a logic-based knowledge representation (i.e., language) that deals with authorization in large-scale, open, distributed systems. Of central importance in any system for deciding whether requests should be authorized in such a system are delegation of authority, negation of authority, and conflicts between authorities. DL's approach to these issues and to the interplay among them borrows from previous work on delegation and trust management in the computer-security literature and previous work on negation and conflict handling in the logic-programming and non-monotonic reasoning literature, but it departs from previous work in some crucial ways. In this introductory paper, we present the syntax and semantics of DL and explain our novel design choices. Trust is one of the most important concepts guiding decision making and contracting in human societies. In artificial societies, this concept has until recently been neglected. The inherent benevolence assumption implemented in many multiagent systems can have hazardous consequences when dealing with deceit in open systems. Our aim is to establish a mechanism that helps agents to cope with environments inhabited by both selfish and co-operative entities. We achieve this by enabling agents to evaluate trust in others. We present a formalisation and an algorithm for trust so that agents can autonomously deal with deception and identify trustworthy parties in open systems. Our approach is twofold: Agents can observe the behaviour of others and thus collect information for establishing an initial trust model. In order to adapt quickly to a new or rapidly changing environment, we enable agents to also make use of observations from other agents. We demonstrate the practical relevance of our ideas by means of a direct mapping from our scenario to electronic commerce.
