Ontology mapping is seen as a solution provider in today's landscape of ontology research. As the number of ontologies that are made publicly available and accessible on the Web increases steadily, so does the need for applications to use them. A single ontology is no longer enough to support the tasks envisaged by a distributed environment like the Semantic Web. Multiple ontologies need to be accessed from several applications. Mapping could provide a common layer from which several ontologies could be accessed and hence could exchange information in semantically sound manners. Developing such mappings has been the focus of a variety of works originating from diverse communities over a number of years. In this article we comprehensively review and present these works. We also provide insights on the pragmatics of ontology mapping and elaborate on a theoretical approach for defining ontology mapping.

In order to tackle the need of sharing knowledge within and across organisational boundaries, the last decade has seen researchers both in academia and industry advocating for the use of ontologies as a means for providing a shared understanding of common domains. But with the generalised use of large distributed environments such as the World Wide Web came the proliferation of many di#erent ontologies, even for the same or similar domain, hence setting forth a new need of sharing---that of sharing ontologies. In addition, if visions such as the Semantic Web are ever going to become a reality, it will be necessary to provide as much automated support as possible to the task of mapping di#erent ontologies. Although many e#orts in ontology mapping have already been carried out, we have noticed that few of them are based on strong theoretical grounds and on principled methodologies. Furthermore, many of them are based only on syntactical criteria. In this paper we present a theory and method for automated ontology mapping based on channel theory, a mathematical theory of semantic information flow.

Increasingly heritage institutions are making digital artifacts available to the general public and research groups to promote the active exploration of heritage and encourage visits to heritage sites. Stories, such as folklore and first person accounts form a useful and engaging heritage resource for this purpose. Story Fountain provides intelligent support for the exploration of digital stories. The suite of functions provided in Story Fountain together support the investigation of questions and topics that require the accumulation, association or induction of information across the story archive. Story Fountain provides specific support toward this end such as for comparing and contrasting story concepts, the presentation of story paths between concepts, and mapping stories and events according to properties such as who met whom and who lived where.

Abstract. In this paper we describe our orchestration model for IRS-III. IRS-III is a framework and platform for developing WSMO based semantic web services. Orchestration specifies how a complex web service calls subordinate web services. Our orchestration model is state-based: control and data flow are defined by and in states respectively; web services and goals are modeled as activities and their execution triggers state changes. Building and maintaining a data-intensive web site is costly and time-consuming and a number of approaches have addressed this problem using a model-based methodology. This paper presents IIPS (Intelligent Information Presentation System), a system that uses an ontology-driven approach to site generation and management. IIPS provides a suite of visual tools, which make it possible to model a data-intensive web site at a conceptual level, using site, interface and domain ontologies. As a result, the site designer can focus on the conceptual structure of the target web site and associated resources, independently of its realization. IIPS also provides explicit mapping mechanisms, which make it possible to generate quickly site implementations from the conceptual model. IIPS improves over existing model-based approaches to web design, by providing knowledge-level support for all aspects of web design, including site and resource specification, presentation and domain data.

Many organisations need to respond quickly to change and their workers need to regularly develop new knowledge and skills. The prevailing approach to meeting these demands is on-the-job training, but this is known to be highly ineffective, cause stress and devalue workplace autonomy. Conversely, organisational learning is a process through which workers learn gradually in the work context through experience, reflection on work practice and collaboration with colleagues. Our approach aims to support and enhance organisational learning around enriched work representations. Work representations are tools and documents used to support collaborative working and learning. These are enriched through associations with formal knowledge models and informal discourse. The work representations, informal discourse and associated knowledge models together form on organisational memory from which knowledge can be later retrieved. Our methodological approach to supporting organisational learning is drawn from three industrial case studies concerned with machine maintenance, team planning and hotline support. The methodology encompasses development and design activities, a description of the roles and duties required to sustain the long term use of the tools, and applicability criteria outlining the kind of organisations that can benefit from this approach.

In this paper we present myPlanet, an ontologydriven personalised Web-based service. We extended the existing infrastructure of the PlanetOnto news publishing system. Our concerns were mainly to provide lightweight means for ontology maintenance and ease the access to repositories of news items, a rich resource for information sharing. We reason about the information being shared by providing an ontology-driven interest-profiling tool which enable users to specify their interests. We also developed ontology-driven heuristics to find news items related to users ’ interests. This paper argues for the role of ontology-driven personalised Web-based services in information sharing.

Abstract. The time of engineers is a precious commodity. This is especially true for engineers of semantic descriptions, who need to be highly skilled in conceptual modeling, a skill which will be in high demand as Semantic Web technologies are adopted by industry. Within the software engineering community Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) like the Eclipse Java Development Toolkit and NetBeans have proved to increase the productivity of engineers by bringing together tools to help engineers with their everyday tasks. This paper motivates the need for such an IDE for the Semantic Web and in particular describes the Web Service Modeling Toolkit (WSMT), an Integrated Development Environment for Semantic Web Services through the WSMO paradigm.
