What is the neural representation of a speech code as it evolves in time? A neural model simulates data concerning segregation and integration of phonetic percepts. Hearing two phonetically related stops in a VC-CV pair (V = vowel; C = consonant) requires 150 ms more closure time than hearing two phonetically different stops in a VC,-C2V pair. Closure time also varies with long-term stimulus rate. The model simulates rate-dependent category boundaries that emerge from feedback: interactions between a working memory for short-term storage of phonetic items and a list categorization network for grouping sequences of items. The conscious speech code is a resonant wave. It emerges after bottom-up signals from the working memory select list chunks which read out top-down expectations that amplify and focus attention on consistent working memory items. In VCi-C2V pairs, resonance is reset by mismatch of Cj with the C, expectation. In VC-CV pairs, resonance prolongs a repeated C. What is the nature of the process that converts brain events into behavioral percepts? An answer to this question is needed in order to understand how the brain controls behavior and how the brain is, in turn, shaped by environmental feedback that is experienced on the behavioral level. The nature of this connection also needs to be understood in order to develop neurally plausible connectionist models. Without it, a correct linking hypothesis cannot be developed between psychological data and the brain mechanisms from which they are generated.

The concepts of declarative memory and procedural memory have been used to distinguish two basic types of learning. A neural network model suggests how such memory processes work together as recognition learning, reinforcement learning, and sensory-motor learning take place during adaptive behaviors. To coordinate these processes, the hippocampal formation and cerebellum each contain circuits that learn to adaptively time their outputs. Within the model, hippocampal timing helps to maintain attention on motivationally salient goal objects during variable task-related delays, and cerebellar timing controls the release of conditioned responses. This property is part of the model's description of how cognitive-emotional interactions focus attention on motivationally valued cues, and how this process breaks down due to hippocampal ablation. The model suggests that the hippocampal mechanisms that help to rapidly draw attention to salient cues could prematurely release motor commands were no...

A series of papers has developed a statistical mechanics of neocortical interactions (SMNI), deriving aggregate behavior of experimentally observed columns of neurons from statistical electrical-chemical properties of synaptic interactions. While not useful to yield insights at the single neuron level, SMNI has demonstrated its capability in describing large-scale properties of short-term memory and electroencephalographic (EEG) systematics. The necessity of including nonlinear and stochastic structures in this development has been stressed. In this paper, a more stringent test is placed on SMNI: The algebraic and numerical algorithms previously developed in this and similar systems are brought to bear to fit large sets of EEG and evoked potential data being collected to investigate genetic predispositions to alcoholism and to extract brain “signatures” of short-term memory. Using the numerical algorithm of Very Fast Simulated Re-Annealing, it is demonstrated that SMNI can indeed fit this data within experimentally observed ranges of its underlying neuronal-synaptic parameters, and use the quantitative modeling results to examine physical neocortical mechanisms to discriminate between high-risk and low-risk populations genetically predisposed to alcoholism. Since this first study is a control to span relatively long time epochs, similar to earlier attempts to establish such correlations, this discrimination is inconclusive because of other neuronal activity which can mask such effects. However, the SMNI model is shown to be consistent

A theory developed by the author to describe macroscopic neocortical interactions demonstrates that empirical values of chemical and electrical parameters of synaptic interactions establish several minima of the path-integral Lagrangian as a function of excitatory and inhibitory columnar firings. The number of possible minima, their time scales of hysteresis and probable reverberations, and their nearestneighbor columnar interactions are all consistent with well-established empirical rules of human shortterm memory. Thus, aspects of conscious experience are derived from neuronal firing patterns, using modern methods of nonlinear nonequilibrium statistical mechanics to develop realistic explicit synaptic interactions.

Artificial intelligence research falls roughly into two categories: formal and implementational. This division is not completely firm: there are implementational studies based on (formal or informal) theories (e.g., CYC, SOAR, OSCAR), and there are theories framed with an eye toward implementability (e.g., predicate circumscription). Nevertheless, formal /theoretical work tends to focus on very narrow problems (and even on very special cases of very narrow problems) while trying to get them "right" in a very strict sense, while implementational work tends to aim at fairly broad ranges of behavior but often at the expense of any kind of overall conceptually unifying framework that informs understanding. It is sometimes urged that this gap is intrinsic to the topic: intelligence is not a unitary thing for which there will be a unifying theory, but rather a "society" of subintelligences whose overall behavior cannot be reduced to useful characterizing and predictive principles.

Two tasks were used to evaluate the grain of visual attention, the minimum spacing at which attention can select individual items. First, observers performed a tracking task at many viewing distances. Performance dropped to chance levels at small display sizes even though, in all conditions, observers could easily resolve the items and their motions. The limiting size for selection was roughly the same whether tracking one or three targets, suggesting that the resolution limit acts independently of the capacity limit of attention. Second, the closest spacing that still allowed individuation of single items in dense, static displays was examined. This critical spacing was about 50% coarser in the radial direction compared to the tangential direction, and was coarser in the upper as opposed to the lower visual field. The results suggest that no more than about 72 items can be arrayed in the central 30 degrees of the visual field while still allowing attentional access to each individuall...

Abstract—An approach is explicitly formulated to blend a local with a global theory to investigate oscillatory neocortical firings, to determine the source and the information-processing nature of the alpha rhythm. The basis of this optimism is founded on a statistical mechanical theory of neocortical interactions which has had success in numerically detailing properties of short-term-memory (STM) capacity at the mesoscopic scales of columnar interactions, and which is consistent with other theory deriving similar dispersion relations at the macroscopic scales of electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) activity.

Recent developments in connectionist architectures for symbolic computation have made it possible to investigate parsing in a connectionist network while still taking advantage of the large body of work on parsing in symbolic frameworks. The work discussed here investigates syntactic parsing in the temporal synchrony variable binding model of symbolic computation in a connectionist network. This computational architecture solves the basic problem with previous connectionist architectures, while keeping their advantages. However, the architecture does have some limitations, which impose constraints on parsing in this architecture. Despite these constraints, the architecture is computationally adequate for syntactic parsing. In addition, the constraints make some significant linguistic predictions. These arguments are made using a specific parsing model. The extensive use of partial descriptions of phrase structure trees is crucial to the ability of this model to recover the syntactic st...
