The influence of prior experience on some forms of behavior and cognition is drastically affected by damage to the hippocampal system. However, if the hippocampal system is left intact both during the experience and for a period of time thereafter, subsequent damage can have much less or even no effect. Such findings suggest that memory traces change over time in a way that makes them less dependent on the hippocampal system. This process of change has often been called consolidation. Consolidation is a very gradual process; in humans, it appears to span up to 15 years. This article asks what consolidation is and why it occurs. We take as our point of departure the view that the initial memory trace that results from a relevant experience consists of changes to the strengths of the connections among neurons in the hippocampal system. Internal models of the environment have an important role to play in adaptive systems in general and are of particular importance for the supervised learning paradigm. In this paper we demonstrate that certain classical problems associated with the notion of the \teacher " in supervised learning can be solved by judicious use of learned internal models as components of the adaptive system. In particular, we show how supervised learning algorithms can be utilized in cases in which an unknown dynamical system intervenes between actions and desired outcomes. Our approach applies to any supervised learning algorithm that is capable of learning in multi-layer networks.

A novel modular connectionist architecture is presented in which the networks composing the architecture compete to learn the training patterns. As a result of the competition, different networks learn different training patterns and, thus, learn to compute different functions. The architecture performs task decomposition in the sense that it learns to partition a task into two or more functionally independent vii tasks and allocates distinct networks to learn each task. . On-line learning in domains where the target concept depends on some hidden context poses serious problems. A changing context can induce changes in the target concepts, producing what is known as concept drift. We describe a family of learning algorithms that flexibly react to concept drift and can take advantage of situations where contexts reappear. The general approach underlying all these algorithms consists of (1) keeping only a window of currently trusted examples and hypotheses; (2) storing concept descriptions and re-using them when a previous context reappears; and (3) controlling both of these functions by a heuristic that constantly monitors the system's behavior. The paper reports on experiments that test the systems' performance under various conditions such as different levels of noise and different extent and rate of concept drift. A connectionist model of human short-term memory is presented that extends the 'phonological loop' (A.D. Baddeley, 1986) to encompass serial order and learning. Psychological and neuropsychological data motivate separate layers of lexical, timing and input and output phonemic information. Connection weights between layers show Hebbian learning and decay over short and long time scales. At recall, the timing signal is rerun, phonemic information feeds back from output to input and lexical nodes compete to be selected. The selected node then receives decaying inhibition. The model provides an explanatory mechanism for the phonological loop, and for the effects of serial position, presentation modality, lexicality, grouping and Hebb repetition. It makes new psychological and neuropsychological predictions and is a starting point for understanding the role of the phonological loop in vocabulary acquisition and for interpreting data from functional neuroimaging.

In the classical feed-forward, modular view of visual processing, the primary visual cortex (area V1) is a module that serves to extract local features such as edges and bars. Representation and recognition of objects are thought to be functions of higher extrastriate cortical areas. This paper presents neurophysiological data that show the later part of V1 neurons' responses reflecting higher order perceptual computations related to Ullman's (Cognition 1984;18:97 -- 159) visual routines and Marr's (Vision NJ: Freeman 1982) full primal sketch, 2 1 2 D sketch and 3D model. Based on theoretical reasoning and the experimental evidence, we propose a possible reinterpretation of the functional role of V1. A research methodology is proposed for understanding intelligence through simulation of artificial animals ("animats") in progressively more challenging environments while retaining characteristics of holism, pragmatism, perception, categorization, and adaptation that are often underrepresented in standard AI approaches to intelligence. It is suggested that basic elements of the methodology should include a theory/taxonomy of environments by which they can be ordered in difficulty---one is offered---and a theory of animat efficiency. Any agent in the real world has to be able to make distinctions between different types of objects, i.e. it must have the competence of categorization. In mobile agents, there is a large variation in proximal sensory stimulation originating from the same object. Therefore, categorization behavior is hard to achieve, and the successes in the past in solving this problem, have been limited. In this paper it is proposed that the problem of categorization in the real world is significantly simplified if it is viewed as one of sensory-motor coordination, rather than one of information processing happening "on the input side". A series of models is presented to illustrate the approach. It is concluded that we should consider replacing the metaphor of information processing for intelligent systems by the one of sensory-motor coordination. What is the neural representation of a speech code as it evolves in time? A neural model simulates data concerning segregation and integration of phonetic percepts. Hearing two phonetically related stops in a VC-CV pair (V = vowel; C = consonant) requires 150 ms more closure time than hearing two phonetically different stops in a VC,-C2V pair. Closure time also varies with long-term stimulus rate. The model simulates rate-dependent category boundaries that emerge from feedback: interactions between a working memory for short-term storage of phonetic items and a list categorization network for grouping sequences of items. The conscious speech code is a resonant wave. It emerges after bottom-up signals from the working memory select list chunks which read out top-down expectations that amplify and focus attention on consistent working memory items. In VCi-C2V pairs, resonance is reset by mismatch of Cj with the C, expectation. In VC-CV pairs, resonance prolongs a repeated C. What is the nature of the process that converts brain events into behavioral percepts? An answer to this question is needed in order to understand how the brain controls behavior and how the brain is, in turn, shaped by environmental feedback that is experienced on the behavioral level. The nature of this connection also needs to be understood in order to develop neurally plausible connectionist models. Without it, a correct linking hypothesis cannot be developed between psychological data and the brain mechanisms from which they are generated.

To investigate the relations between structure and function in both artificial and natural neural networks, we present a series of simulations and analyses with modular neural networks. We suggest a number of design principles in the form of explicit ways in which neural modules can cooperate in recognition tasks. These results may supplement recent accounts of the relation between structure and function in the brain. The networks used consist out of several modules, standard subnetworks that serve as higher-order units with a distinct structure and function. The simulations rely on a particular network module called CALM (Murre, Phaf, and Wolters, 1989, 1992). This module, developed mainly for unsupervised categorization and learning, is able to adjust its local learning dynamics. The way in which modules are interconnected is an important determinant of the learning and categorization behaviour of the network as a whole.
