A hierarchy of convex relaxations for semialgebraic problems is introduced. For questions reducible to a finite number of polynomial equalities and inequalities, it is shown how to construct a complete family of polynomially sized semidefinite programming conditions that prove infeasibility. The main tools employed are a semidefinite programming formulation of the sum of squares decomposition for multivariate polynomials, and some results from real algebraic geometry. The techniques provide a constructive approach for finding bounded degree solutions to the Positivstellensatz, and are illustrated with examples from diverse application fields.

GloptiPoly is a Matlab/SeDuMi addon to build and solve convex linear matrix inequality relaxations of the (generally nonconvex) global optimization problem of minimizing a multivariable polynomial function subject to polynomial inequality, equality or integer constraints. It generates a series of lower bounds monotonically converging to the global optimum. Global optimality is detected and isolated optimal solutions are extracted automatically. Numerical experiments show that for most of the small and mediumscale problems described in the literature, the global optimum is reached at low computational cost. 1

Abstract. We propose a semidefinite optimization approach to the problem of deriving tight moment inequalities for P (X ∈ S), for a set S defined by polynomial inequalities and a random vector X defined on Ω ⊆Rn that has a given collection of up to kthorder moments. In the univariate case, we provide optimal bounds on P (X ∈ S), when the first k moments of X are given, as the solution of a semidefinite optimization problem in k + 1 dimensions. In the multivariate case, if the sets S and Ω are given by polynomial inequalities, we obtain an improving sequence of bounds by solving semidefinite optimization problems of polynomial size in n, for fixed k. We characterize the complexity of the problem of deriving tight moment inequalities. We show that it is NPhard to find tight bounds for k ≥ 4 and Ω = Rn and for k ≥ 2 and Ω = Rn +, when the data in the problem is rational. For k =1andΩ=Rn + we show that we can find tight upper bounds by solving n convex optimization problems when the set S is convex, and we provide a polynomial time algorithm when S and Ω are unions of convex sets, over which linear functions can be optimized efficiently. For the case k =2andΩ=Rn, we present an efficient algorithm for finding tight bounds when S is a union of convex sets, over which convex quadratic functions can be optimized efficiently. This paper presents a novel methodology for safety verification of hybrid systems. For proving that all trajectories of a hybrid system do not enter an unsafe region, the proposed method uses a function of state termed a barrier certificate. The zero level set of a barrier certificate separates the unsafe region from all possible trajectories starting from a given set of initial conditions, hence providing an exact proof of system safety. No explicit computation of reachable sets is required in the construction of barrier certificates, which makes nonlinearity, uncertainty, and constraints can be handled directly within this framework.

A relaxation of Lyapunov's direct method has been proposed recently that allows for an algorithmic construction of Lyapunov functions to prove stability of equilibria in nonlinear systems, but the search is restricted to systems with polynomial vector fields. In this paper, the above technique is extended to include systems with equality, inequality, and integral constraints. This allows certain nonpolynomial nonlinearities in the vector field to be handled exactly and the constructed Lyapunov functions to contain nonpolynomial terms. It also allows robustness analysis to be performed. Some examples are given to illustrate how this is done.

This result can be viewed as an extension of earlier separate results, which have established the copositive representation of a small collection of NPhard problems. A simplification, which reduces the dimension of the linear conic program, and an extension to complementarity constraints are established, and computational issues are discussed. 1

We consider the problem of minimizing a polynomial over a semialgebraic set defined by polynomial equalities and inequalities. When the polynomial equalities have a finite number of complex solutions and define a radical ideal we can reformulate this problem as a semidefinite programming problem. This semidefinite program involves combinatorial moment matrices, which are matrices indexed by a basis of the quotient vector space R[x 1 , . . . , x n ]/I. Our arguments are elementary and extend known facts for the grid case including 0/1 and polynomial programming. They also relate to known algebraic tools for solving polynomial systems of equations with finitely many complex solutions. Semidefinite approximations can be constructed by considering truncated combinatorial moment matrices; rank conditions are given (in a grid case) that ensure that the approximation solves the original problem at optimality.
