Introduction The World Wide Web has the potential to become a primary source for storing and accessing linguistic data, including data of the sort that are routinely collected by field linguists. Having large amounts of linguistic data on the Web will give linguists, indigenous communities, and language learners access to resources that have hitherto been difficult to obtain. For linguists, scientific data from the world's languages will be just as accessible as information in on-line newspapers. For indigenous communities, the Web will be a powerful instrument for maintaining language as a cultural resource. For students and educators, a new tool will be available for teaching and learning minority and endangered languages. For linguists in particular, having linguistic data on the Web means that data from different languages can be automatically searched and compared. Furthermore, the Web would provide ready computational resources for the development of machine translation and othe

Strategic decision making, especially in the areas of business intelligence and competitive intelligence, requires the acquisition of decision-relevant information pieces like market trends, fusions and company values. This information is extracted by pre-processing and querying multiple sources, combining and condensing the findings. It is characteristic that the extraction process is resource intensive and has to be performed regularly and quite frequently. In the research project PARMENIDES, we are developing methods that establish ontologies over an application domain, annotate documents with the ontology components and identify the entities in them, so that we can decompose business into conventional queries towards entities and XML-annotated texts.

Abstract — This paper deals with semantic interpretation of audiovisual data. It investigates how explicit interpretation of uncertainty can help to bridge the semantic gap. We present a case study of FuzzyOWL — a current uncertainty representation framework — applied in the context of the recent European project CARETAKER focusing on automated situation awareness, diagnosis and decision support. A particular user-oriented task is modelled in FuzzyOWL. The paper briefly summarizes basic features of the formalism, discusses pros and cons and points out difficulties and problems connected to its employment. Index Terms — uncertainty representation, FuzzyOWL, audiovisual system.

Quality related aspects relevant for service-based applications cover a broad field of research, including work on quality modeling, QoS and SLA negotiation, as well as constructive and analytical quality assurance (like testing, monitoring and static analysis). This deliverable provides a survey of this broad field of “service quality ” and identifies the key areas where research contributions are currently available. Based on this survey of the state of the art, important and emerging research challenges are identified that could be pursued in the future in order to close several of the gaps which emerge from the current state of the art on “service quality”. Abstract. Designing user interfaces for ubiquitous computing applications is a challenging task. In this paper we discuss how to build intelligent interfaces. The foundations are usability principles that are valid on very general levels. We present a number of established methods for the design process that can help to meet these principle requirements. In particular participatory and iterative so-called human centered approaches are important for interfaces in ubiquitous computing. In particular the question how to make interactional interfaces more intelligent is not trivial and there are multiple approaches to enhance either the intelligence of the system or that of the user. Novel interface approaches, presented herein, follow the idea of embodied interaction and put particular emphasis on the situated use of a system and the mental models humans develop in context. 1
