The interaction of suffixing algorithms and ranking techniques in retrieval performance, particularly in an online environment, was investigated. Three general purpose suffixing algorithms were used for retrieval on the Cranfield 1400, Medlars, and CACM test collections, with no significant improvement in performance shown for any of the algorithms. A failure analysis suggested three modifications to ranking techniques: variable weighting of term variants, selective stemming depend-ing on query length, and selective stemming depending on term importance. None of these modifications im-proved performance. Recommendations are made re-garding the uses of suffixing in an online environment. introduction Traditional statistically based keyword retrieval systems have been the subject of experiments for over 30 years. The use of simple keyword matching as a basis for re-trieval can produce acceptable results, and the addition of ranking techniques based on the frequency of a given matching term within a document collection and/or within a given document adds considerable improvement (Sparck Jones, 1972; Salton, 1983). The conflation of word variants using suffixing al-gorithms was one of the earliest enhancements to statistical keyword retrieval systems (Salton, 1971), and has become so standard a part of most systems that many system descriptions neglect to mention the use of suffixing, or to identify the algorithm was used. Suffixing was originally done for two principle reasons: the large reduction in stor-age required by a retrieval dictionary (Bell, 1979), and the increase in performance due to the use of word variants. Recent research has been more concerned with perfor-mance improvement than with storage reduction.

Most web pages are linked to others with related content. This idea, combined with another that says that text in, and possibly around, HTML anchors describe the pages to which they point, is the foundation for a usable WorldWide Web. In this paper, we examine to what extent these ideas hold by empirically testing whether topical locality mirrors spatial locality of pages on the Web. In particular, we find that the likelihood of linked pages having similar textual content to be high; the similarity of sibling pages increases when the links from the parent are close together; titles, descriptions, and anchor text represent at least part of the target page; and that anchor text may be a useful discriminator among unseen child pages. These results show the foundations necessary for the success of many web systems, including search engines, focused crawlers, linkage analyzers, and intelligent web agents.

In recent years, we have witnessed a tremendous growth in the volume of text documents available on the Internet, digital libraries, news sources, and company-wide intranets. This has led to an increased interest in developing methods that can help users to effectively navigate, summarize, and organize this information with the ultimate goal of helping them to find what they are looking for. Fast and high-quality document clustering algorithms play an important role towards this goal as they have been shown to provide both an intuitive navigation/browsing mechanism by organizing large amounts of information into a small number of meaningful clusters as well as to greatly improve the retrieval performance either via cluster-driven dimensionality reduction, term-weighting, or query expansion. This ever-increasing importance of document clustering and the expanded range of its applications led to the development of a number of new and novel algorithms with different complexity-quality trade-offs. Among them, a class of clustering algorithms that have relatively low computational requirements are those that treat the clustering problem as an optimization process which seeks to maximize or minimize a particular clustering criterion function defined over the entire clustering solution.

Information dissemination is a powerful mechanism for finding information in wide-area environments. An information dissemination server accepts long-term user queries, collects new documents from information sources, matches the documents against the queries, and continuously updates the users with relevant information. This paper is a retrospective of the Stanford Information Filtering Service (SIFT), a system that as of April 1996 was processing over 40,000 worldwide subscriptions and over 80,000 daily documents. The paper describes some of the indexing mechanisms that were developed for SIFT, as well as the evaluations that were conducted to select a scheme to implement. It also describes the implementation of SIFT, and experimental results for the actual system. The World Wide Web is emerging not only as an infrastructure for data, but also for a broader variety of resources that are increasingly being made available as Web services. Relevant current standards like UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP are in their fledgling years and form the basis of making Web services a workable and broadly adopted technology. However, realizing the fuller scope of the promise of Web services and associated service oriented architecture will requite further technological advances in the areas of service interoperation, service discovery, service composition, and process orchestration. Semantics, especially as supported by the use of ontologies, and related Semantic Web technologies, are likely to provide better qualitative and scalable solutions to these requirements. Just as semantic annotation of data in the Semantic Web is the first critical step to better search, integration and analytics over heterogeneous data, semantic annotation of Web services is an equally critical first step to achieving the above promise. Our approach is to work with existing Web services technologies and combine them with ideas from the Semantic Web to create a better framework for Web service discovery and composition. In this paper we present MWSAF (METEOR-S Web Service Annotation Framework), a framework for semi-automatically marking up Web service descriptions with ontologies. We have developed algorithms to match and annotate WSDL files with relevant ontologies. We use domain ontologies to categorize Web services into domains. An empirical study of our approach is presented to help evaluate its performance.

Many academic journals ask their authors to provide a list of about five to fifteen keywords, to appear on the first page of each article. Since these key words are often phrases of two or more words, we prefer to call them keyphrases. There is a wide variety of tasks for which keyphrases are useful, as we discuss in this paper. We approach the problem of automatically extracting keyphrases from text as a supervised learning task. We treat a document as a set of phrases, which the learning algorithm must learn to classify as positive or negative examples of keyphrases. Our first set of experiments applies the C4.5 decision tree induction algorithm to this learning task. We evaluate the performance of nine different configurations of C4.5. The second set of experiments applies the GenEx algorithm to the task. We developed the GenEx algorithm specifically for automatically extracting keyphrases from text. In order to increase retrieval precision, some new search engines provide manually verified answers to Frequently Asked Queries (FAQs). An underlying task is the identification of FAQs. This paper describes our attempt to cluster similar queries according to their contents as well as user logs. Our preliminary results show that the resulting clusters provide useful information for FAQ identification.

This technical note describes straightforward techniques for document indexing and retrieval that have been solidly established through extensive testing and are easy to apply. They are useful for many different types of text material, are viable for very large files, and have the advantage that they do not require special skills or training for searching, but are easy for end users. The document and text retrieval methods described here have a sound theoretical basis, are well established by extensive testing, and the ideas involved are now implemented in some commercial retrieval systems. Testing in the last few years has, in particular, shown that the methods presented here work very well with full texts, not only title and abstracts, and with large files of texts containing three quarters of a million documents. These tests, the TREC Tests (see Harman 1993 - 1997; IP&M 1995), have been rigorous comparative evaluations involving many different approaches to information retrieval. ...
