In order to develop trustworthy information systems, security aspects should be considered from the early project stages. This is particularly true for authorization and access control services, which decide which users can access which parts of the system and in what ways. Software patterns have been used with success to encapsulate best practices in software design. A good collection of patterns is an invaluable aid in designing new systems by inexperienced developers and is also useful to teach and understand difficult problems. Following in this direction, this paper presents a pattern system to describe authorization and access control models. First, we present a set of patterns that include a basic authorization pattern that is the basis for patterns for the wellestablished discretionary and role-based access control models. Metadata access control models have appeared recently to address the high flexibility requirements of open, heterogeneous systems, such as enterprise or e-commerce portals. These models are complex and we use the basic patterns to develop a set of patterns for metadata-based access control.

The design and maintenance of complex engineering systems such as a jet engine generates a significant amount of documentation. Increasingly, aerospace manufacturers are shifting their focus from selling products to providing services. As a result, when designing new engines, engineers must increasingly consider the life-cycle requirements in addition to design parameters. To identify possible areas of concern, engineers must obtain knowledge gained from the entire life of an engine. However, because of the size and distributed nature of a company’s operation, engineers often do not have access to front-line maintenance data. In addition, the large number of documents accrued makes it impossible to examine thoroughly. This paper presents a prototype knowledge-based document repository for such an application. It searches and analyzes distributed document resources, and provides engineers with a summary view of the underlying knowledge. The aim is to aid engineers in creating design requirement documents that incorporate aftermarket issues. Unlike existing document repositories and digital libraries, our approach is knowledge-based, where users browse summary reports instead of following suggested links. To test the validity of our proposed architecture, we have developed and deployed a working prototype. The prototype has been demonstrated to engineers and received positive reviews.

The DB TECH REPORTS icon is made from two letters in an early version of the Rune alphabet, which was used by the Vikings, among others. Runes have angular shapes and lack horizontal lines because the primary storage medium was wood, although they may also be found on jewelry, tools, and weapons. Runes were perceived as having magic, hidden powers. The first letter in the logo is “Dagaz, ” the rune for day or daylight and the phonetic equivalent of “d. ” Its meanings include happiness, activity, and satisfaction. The second letter is “Berkano, ” which is associated with the birch tree. Its divinatory meanings include health, new beginnings, growth, plenty, and clearance. It is associated with Idun, goddess of Spring, and with fertility. It is the phonetic equivalent of “b.” This paper surveys the most relevant research on combining Data Warehouse (DW) and Web data. It studies the XML technologies that are currently being used to integrate, store, query and retrieve web data, and their application to data warehouses. The paper addresses the problem of integrating heterogeneous DWs and explains how to deal with both semi-structured and unstructured data in DWs and On-Line Analytical Processing. 1

Knowledge Portals (KPs) are highly integrative Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) that promise to synthesize widely dispersed knowledge and to interconnect individuals in order to provide a 'onestop knowledge shop'. Yet, KPs face major challenges in practice, as the intricacies of knowledge exchange are subject to varied individual and social factors. At the same time, growing anecdotal evidence from the literature indicates KPs ' enormous potential. This paper takes some steps towards a design theory of KPs. It defines and describes KPs to lay the foundation for a design theory of KPs. Based on a review of 42 empirical KP studies, it identifies the key challenges in KP design: (1) knowledge integration, (2) sufficient participation, and (3) favorable organizational culture. Finally, it proposes a set of testable propositions for a design theory.

Abstract: Portals onthe web are important public sources of information f or expert knowledge. They function as powerful gateways that consolidate access and organize information. Existing web technologies provide the means which most current web portals apply. However, they leave some open issues that recent Semantic Web technologies promise to solve. Portals that employ semantic technologies are called semantic portals. Inthis paper, we present the synopsis of asemantic portal that isdedicated to distributing practical and scientific knowledge on the domain ofMobile Business. We explain the motivation, the architectural considerations, and the current portal prototype. Emphasis isplaced onontology use, request processing, and presentation. Knowledge Portals (KPs) are highly integrative Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) that promise to synthesize widely dispersed knowledge and to interconnect individuals in order to provide a ‘one-stop knowledge shop’. Yet, KPs face major challenges in practice, as the intricacies of knowledge exchange are subject to varied individual and social factors. At the same time, growing anecdotal evidence from case studies indicates KPs ’ enormous potential. In this paper, we take some initial steps towards a theory for KPs that more distinctly conceptualizes KPs and emphasizes a KP’s role to unify networking and repository KMS features. We describe three major challenges to successful KP deployment: (1) sufficient contribution, (2) favorable organizational culture, and (3) knowledge integration—and validate these as applicable
