The Data Analysis and System Modeling Environment (dasme) is a computerassisted modeling environment, currently under development at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, designed to support groundbased mission operations with a mixed discrete/continuous modeling capability. This paper describes planned castbased extensions to dasme to support a broader range of systems theoretical computing models, and in particular models utilizing concepts from Generalized Information Theory (git) such as fuzzy systems, possibilistic measurement, and possibilistic processes. The potential for the use of possibility theory in the qualitative modelbased diagnosis of spacecraft systems is described. The first sections of the paper briefly introduce the ModelBased Diagnostic (mbd) approach to spacecraft fault diagnosis; Qualitative Modeling (qm) methodologies; and the concepts of possibilistic modeling in the context of Generalized Information Theory (git). Then the necessary conditions for the applicability of possibilistic methods to qualitative mbd, and a number of potential directions for such an application, are described. Possibility theory is being developed as an alternative to traditional theories of uncertainty. While possibility is logically independent of probability theory, they are related: both arise in DempsterShafer evidence theory as fuzzy measures defined on random sets; and their distributions are fuzzy sets. This proposal is to apply possibility theory to the qualitative modelbased trend analysis of spacecraft components. Possibility theory is a new form of information theory. In the context of Generalized Information Theory, it is based on consistent random sets, and is closely related to fuzzy sets, fuzzy measures, DempsterShafer evidence theory, and interval analysis. Possibility theory is useful for modeling complex systems, where only weak evidence is available. Possibilistic modeling methods, including possibilistic measurement procedures and Markov processes, will be implemented in C++, and application will be made within an ongoing trend analysis effort for spacecraft batteries. This proposal is to do basic research on the use of possibility theory to represent uncertainty in measurement combination problems. Possibility theory is a new form of information theory based on both onepoint distribution functions of consistent random sets and a generalization of interval analysis. Possibility theory is closely related to fuzzy sets, fuzzy measures, and DempsterShafer evidence theory; however, unlike them, it is based on objective measurement. Possibility distributions provide a natural form for the representation of uncertainty when the measurand or the measuring device is complex, and only small samples from multiple measurement sources are available.
