This paper reports on an ongoing software measurement experiment which has been set up to monitor and evaluate team based student projects building object-oriented software. In this experiment, students are building the same system, in two languages (Smalltalk and Eiffel). Our process, called the Software Assessment Through Ongoing Profile Sheets (SATOPS) is being used in a project management framework to provide (i) a more objective feedback to improve students' learning; (ii) a method for measuring their understanding for grading purposes; and (iii) an instrument for making software engineering metrics measurements. We argue that SATOPS is the basis for reproducible software engineering experiments in a university environment. 1 Introduction The need for a repeatable software process to improve the quality of the process and product has been well documented [6, 11, 14, 15, 18]. The process should: ffl Be monitored through a prescribed set of activities for assessing the development...

This paper reports on an ongoing objectoriented software measurement experiment which has been set up to monitor and evaluate team-based projects building OO software. The process, called the Software Assessment Through Ongoing Profile Sheets (SATOPS) which relies on manual form entries for recording measurement data in a project management framework is being automated using JAVA. The automated tracking of software process and resource activities will improve the metrics data collection and analysis phase. 1 Introduction The need for a repeatable software process to improve the quality of the process and product has been well documented (Fenton, Pfleeger, and Glass 1994; Knuth 1992; Mohamed, Sadler, and Law 1993) and has been demonstrated through ongoing OO software process and product measurement experiments in (Ramakrishnan 1995; Ramakrishnan and Menzies 1996). It is also well known that tracking of resources, products and defect tracking are the basic building blocks of any bottom-...
