Although organizational innovation with information technology is often carefully considered, bandwagon phenomena indicate that much innovative behavior may nevertheless be of the “me too” variety. In this essay, we explore such differences in innovative behavior. Adopting a perspective that is both institutional and cognitive, we introduce the notion of mindful innovation with IT. A mindful firm attends to an IT innovation with reasoning 1 Jane Webster was the accepting senior editor for this paper. Swanson & Ramiller/Innovating Mindfully with IT RESEARCH ARTICLE grounded in its own organizational facts and specifics. We contrast this with mindless innovation, where a firm’s actions betray an absence of such attention and grounding. We develop these concepts by drawing on the recent appearance of the idea of mindfulness in the organizational literature, and adapting it for application to IT innovation. We then bring mindfulness and mindlessness together in a larger theoretical synthesis in which these apparent opposites are seen to interact in ways that help to shape the overall landscape of opportunity for organizational innovation with IT. We conclude by suggesting several promising new research directions.

the ability of firms to reduce costs and increase the responsiveness of their supply chain. This paper develops an empirically supported model of the organizational capabilities enabled by SCM IS. The model integrates and enriches theoretical and empirical studies of competitive strategy, supply chain management, and interorganizational information systems. Evidence from an exploratory case study of three large firms in the electronics manufacturing industry is examined to build a better-supported theory of SCM IS capabilities. The findings suggest the organizational capabilities enabled by SCM IS can be conceptualized as the level of support provided for: operational efficiency; operational flexibility; internal analysis; and external analysis. The theoretical model furthers an understanding of SCM IS capabilities and is sufficiently developed to permit operationalization for future studies evaluating the effectiveness of SCM IS.

One would think that the enactment of the HIPAA, with its mandates on data security and privacy, would have brought a major shift in the security management practices within the US healthcare. Unfortunately, recent industry reports indicate low levels of regulatory compliance, thus raising security concerns for the US health IT infrastructure. This research develops a regulatory compliance model by drawing insights from the institutional theory literature to identify the key drivers influencing HIPAA compliance, both institutional and market forces (e.g., variability in state-level privacy laws comprehensiveness, interdependency between privacy and security rules, pressure from compliance leaders in the region, compliance officer‟s functional background, and the consumer concern for privacy). We validate the model using a national sample of acute-care hospitals and find partial support. The primary contribution of this research lies in the novel application of institutional theory to explain the variability in regulatory

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have an organizational impact and lead to organizational change. The goal with these changes is to increase organizational effectiveness. However, implementations have in some cases been associated with general information system problems. One such problematic area is requirements specification. This paper presents a competing values based framework for supporting requirements specification by enhancing communication between designers and users. With the framework it is possible to position ERP capabilities for different organizational processes. These are based on four different generic ERP subtypes, which are founded in human relations, open systems, internal process and rational goal organizational models and their competing value dimensions: structure, focus, and ends versus means. Keywords: Competing values approach, ERP, requirements specification, effectiveness 1. Introduction Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are important t...

The implementation of Information Technology (IT) is always associated with a series of complex organizational change issues. For this reason, the literature on IT-enabled organizational change is growing large and spans across management science, organizational development, and Information Systems (IS) research. Despite the handful of research in IT-enabled organizational change, the change initiative projects continue to fail. There are two particular issues arise from such problems, which are conflicting results due to the differential of theoretical model’s structure and the difficulty of contemporary IT-enabled organizational change literature in informing the dynamic environment and customizable technology issues. For this purpose, this research aims to understand the reciprocal relationships between technology and organization by adopting structuration theory. This research proposes the extension of Orlikowski’s (1992) structuration model of technology by separating the institutional properties into environmental structural properties and organizational structural properties. An interpretive case study was conducted on one IT project at public organization in Singapore. The application of structuration theory facilitated understanding the structuration factors and process in IT-enabled organizational change. In addition, the distinct separation of institutional

The purpose of this paper is to describe an analytical tool that can be used for evaluating the value of IT by acknowledging the socio-political process of computerization. In order to validate the tool the paper exemplifies how the evaluation tool has been used in one case study. For pedagogical reasons, the analysis is limited to one actor group – the politicians. The analysis showed that the politicians mainly attributed future and current information system with public, managerial, and professional values.

One would think that the enactment of the HIPAA and associated mandates on data security and privacy has brought a major shift in the information security management practices across the US healthcare sector. Unfortunately, recent industry reports indicate substantially low level of regulatory compliance, thus raising security concerns to US health IT infrastructure. This research develops a regulatory compliance model by drawing insights from institutional theory literature to identify the key drivers influencing compliance, both institutional and market forces- e.g. mix of state and federal privacy regulations, pressure from compliance leaders in the region, and the consumer demand for privacy among others. The primary contribution of this research lies in the novel application of institutional theory to explain the variability in regulatory compliance prevalent in the US healthcare sector.
